3 newps large cents

these were the cents i had gotten at the CSNS along with the peace dollars i posted before.
PCGS MS64RB 1852 cent.
PCGS VG10 1812 S288 cent from penny lady.
1794 cent which im having problems with.
any comments/opinions appreciated.

Classic Head large cents might be the most underrated coinage series in all of US numismatics. Tough type to find nice.

 

Very nice coins. The 1812 is quite nice for the series -- a tough one as Tom points out.

Nice additions - what kind of problem are you having with the 1794?

 

Love the 1852.
My kind of coin.
Plenty of Mint red in the nooks and crannies.

The 1794 looks like environmental damage, sort of like it was buried.
I've got a 1794 (Head of 1794) coming for my type set.

 

Beautiful coins. Large Cents are a wonderful series to collect.

 

NICE 1812 cent, much nicer than my 11/10 (in the axial lighting thread). The 1852 is very attractive, as well.

Looks like an S-29. Look at the R in America. Not 100% sure.

 

i was thinking S-30 with the date placement. the rev is identical.

 

S-30 no question. Liberty far from Bust, Junction of hair and forehead below center of T, vertical chips below cap (early die state, chips are faint but the right hand one is definitely there.) S-30 or 31, Short fraction bar S-30.

From Coinfacts S-30 You have the one big hair wave at the botton then go up to the third and fourth hair ends and look to the left and you will see the right hand die chip. It is clearly visible on your coin as well.

This is a slightly later state of the obv where the chips are a little clearer


S-38,39,40, and NC-2 also have the same obv but the chips are in a MUCH later state and much heavier such as below or even heavier.

Yep - I see that now and I agree that it is S-30. Did not read far enough saw that long R and stopped. Very cool post condor. The one thing I noticed was how the pole changes over the die states. Very cool.

the prices of the coins were
520 for the 1852
300 for the 1812
500 for the 1794

 

You are right to be disappointed in the 1794. Not a bad coin, but $500 is a bit strong.

Otherwise, you did just fine.

All of the above IMO.

 

everything at that show was strong. i was considering a S-51 VF30 porous/rim dings net VG10 for 1200 but didnt want to spend everything i had.

 

My advice: Save your money for problem-free examples. Collect them in lower grade if you have to. They certainly will be easier to liquidate if and when that time comes.

That said, if you're going to collect coins with problems, copper is probably the right metal to do so in -- collectors of copper, particularly early copper, are much more comfortable with problems than other segments of the market.

Although I did not attend the show, I have heard the same thing from other collectors I speak with regularly.

 

It's the S-30 in my opinion. The strong double curl only shows up on Obverse 11 and 12. The leaf under the left foot of A in STATES is a giveaway for Reverse H.
