Recently I found a 1958 D wheat penny with a period between the w and e in IN GOD W.E TRUST. I haven't been able to find anything about the error online. The upper part of the B is filled in with a blob also, but the dot/period between the w and e is definitely symmetrical. I'm new to this, keep trying to post and keep getting told that my message isn't long enough. I would love to post a picture but I busted my camera a couple weeks ago. Any insight would be appreciated as I said, I keep coming up with zilch online. It apparently isn't a valuable date unless it is a ddo variety, and I do not believe this is, but the period/dot is visible without magnification and I must say, it is pretty cool. Thank you.
You need to download pictures for us to get a better idea of what you are talking about, see if you can borrow someone's From the sounds of it, it's not an error but more of a die chip. -Shrek
yea try and gets some pics! i found a 1958-D today. i was all happy thinking it was a DD, but its just a worthless MD.:crying:
took some pictures I hope these help....error or not I just love it I have never seen a coin like this!
It maybe the cracked skull type?but one never knows till they have it hand and lop it.photo do not always show everything.
I'm with you. Either way, not a valuable error, but that could definitely be a lamination peel instead of a chip.
More Pics Thank you for all your expertise. I've never seen anything like this, but this is my new hobby. I am posting a couple more pictures. I'm trying to get them closer.
It's still a die chip. When a small fragment breaks and falls away from a die, it leaves a tiny depression in the die. Since it is depressed (sunken) on the die, it leaves a raised spot on any coins struck. It is very common on coins in the later part of the fifties and early sixties. You see evidence of die chips most often on things like the inside portions of the letter B in LIBERTY or sometimes between the letters of LIBERTY. You will also see it fairly often in and around the digits of the date. It can happen anywhere though Have Fun, Bill
I agree FIR!! but there are a few collectors that will buy die chip& die cracks but they have be MS-65Red or better 93 good photo's!! that always helps!!
