Yikes! When I got my LN6 set I noticed a bit of discolor under the loupe. 6 months ago it was worse and now it is pretty easy to see with the naked eye. Anyone else seeing stuff like this?
A few of my proof pennies in mine werent frost white from the start on the reverse. I checked them early last week and they still looked the same. Figured it was normal some frost was more white then others. But yours looks bad :/ Wonder whats causing that.
Straight from the mint and ordered the first day available. Unlikely it's a reject set I think. I know the mint put out the tarnish warning about these coins http://mintnewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/2009-mint-set-arrives-tarnish-warning.html but the rest of the coin is clean. It is very localized, like some kind of contamination. Or perhaps the anti tarnish treatment was applied incorrectly.
Humidity and Heat,,, are they safe from both ? Anyway,, mine still looks like they did when I got them..... nice.
I do live in a humid climate but I don't think that is it. These were stored with my 09 silver set which also has the 95% copper lincolns and those still look good.
Corrosion or tone. Toning on coins is a major subject of numismatics, check some of the many threads here on CT about what causes it and how eye appeal in regards to toning can increase collector desire and prices for such coins.
I started this thread right after receiving my LN6 directly from the Mint. LN6 Spots, Errors, or other issues. Post and discuss any you find. I was curious about the spots I saw on the coins the day I opened the set and knew there were going to be problems. I sold the set with the coins pictured in the thread, so I cannot attest to their current condition.
That is interesting Krispy. It looks like there is a dark spot in the same place on your capital reverse as the splotch on mine. I don't have pics of mine from earlier but they started out with a dark spot just like you had.
Now I had to get mine out and look at it. Mine still looks looks good. I don't think I'd like that kind of toning,I hope mine don't turn like that. The only positive is that you can replace the coins in the capsules. It would just suck having to buy replacements for what I think is a mint goof-up.
Wouldn't it be interesting if the coins in the LN6 set developed a "special" tone over time unique to being housed in that set? That 50,000 mintage limit would take on more significance. I know that I am dreaming. TC
I have one more still sealed in the box. Will probably sell it at some point later on in the year near the year end holidays. Maybe the tone will have an established reputation by that time at the rate these spots are appearing, hopefully a good rep, that is.
There was a time that "toning" really bothered me, but thanks to the "toning freak" guys on this forum I'm a little more open to it......
I had to pull mine to look after seeing that. They're still perfect. Like someone said, I wonder if humidity might have gotten to them. Guy~
