I was looking through some of my father's silver coins the other day and found this Standing Liberty Quarter from my past... I purchased this at Macy's Herald Square when they had a coin department on the top floor past the Persian rug department. Probably 35 years ago at the least. After I had bought a few coins from them they realized I was not a threat (I was in a band at the time and had long hair) and would let me look at coins while they tended shop. Back then I would choose coins based on eye appeal and not strictly on grade. I believe Macy's called this VF+. I had always wanted a Type-1 SLQ and had just worked several hours of overtime. When I saw it I fell in love. What do you think? VF-25? VF-30? VF-35?
25 sounds about right. A bit worried about an old cleaning, but would want to see the coin in-hand before saying anything stronger. Regardless of the above, what a cool coin! I love this series and they really look nice in circulated grades!
p.s. this particular coin is typically very fully struck. finding a coin from the 20's with such a strike is very difficult, but for a type 1 '17, a piece of cake -- in fact its harder to find a weakly struck example of this coin than a strongly struck one, IMO.
I have been looking for a certain one, I have seen quite a few of these and I know it is out there somewhere. I also think that the coin had an old cleaning, but it just may be the photos. It looks a bit better than a 25 to me but not quite a 30 I would give it a 28.
very very nice. to my novice eyes it looks better then what everyone is grading it at. but will not argue because i am sure, its just me, and i am wrong.
I bought a Trade Dollar at Macy's for my dad one Christmas and years later when I sent it off to be certified it came back in a body bag as improperly cleaned. So it wouldn't surprise me if this was cleaned 35 years ago. I still like it.
That's an amazing looking SLQ up there. I think at minimum a VF35, it's a beauty Hiho, good for you!!
What a great background story on this one! Macy's did coins? Wow! I'd say 25 with the various hairline scratches (cleaning?). Nice strike and the shield looks pretty nice/intact too. Thanks for sharing this one.
I think you got a nice type 1 VF 35. Way back in 1964 When I was 15 years old I would go to the same Macy's Coin Shop ,friendly dealer George gave me great advice .What a flash back in time Department Stores with Coin Shop !
Type 2 Standing Liberty Quarter Beautiful coin Type 1 (1917) it was changed to cover the bare breast with chain mail mesh also the shield and moved the Eagle on the reverse up, I have both but only could come up with this example of the type 2 design changes. I liked the original 1917 type 1 better .
