if we are lucky they are just getting it today, so by the time they take to look at it and send it back,

probably not for another week, give or take a few days.....

they should have walk in grading services in every city!

:high5:I just was notified by NGC Imaging and:

Can you believe it? Thanks everyone for your support and guidance. My friend could only say " that's awesome, that's awesome".
All I can say is " I knew it, I knew it" was better than EF-40.

Well you guys and gals had a part in getting it done. Your advice and urgency to ship it out to a TPG while my friend and I played the measurement games brought back the goal to get it authenticated, graded, and slabbed. I enjoyed every minuet of it.
Now I have to get back to my Lincolns.
Hey LTRAIN, thats an AU-58 and a good one too. Yep, I eyeballed that and a lot of others in the Heritage site.

Okay, now does anybody have some good advice for my friend? I think that I rushed him having the '84-D' authenticated but that was for his best interest. He still kn ows nothing about what he should do about owning this coin. I know he is going to put it in a saftey deposit box. Probably to let the air clear so he can think about it.
What suggestions can you give him to consider about what he can do with this coin. He is young, not quite 40 yrs. old, I believe. I sure he has two
children maybe elementary or junior high school age. Also, but I don't think it is a kicker, the coins were given to his wife by her father so technically and legally they are hers. I have never met her----yet.
Any good suggestions to guide him? Yes I know of Heritage Auctions but that's all I know.

If sold a coin like that needs to be sold at auction... but it has to be the right auction. I would recommend either Heritage or Bowers and Merena. I would have him open lines of communication with both companies and which ever gives him the better deal to take it. Sometimes you can negotiate the companies terms as far as the percentage you have to pay and sometimes you can even get a few percent of the auction companies "juice" with the right coins (I personally think that this is definitely the right "coin"). I would aim high asking both companies for 4%-6% over what the coin hammers for and see what their reactions are.

    What he said.

I'd probably sell it and put it towards paying off my house... the faster you're outta debt, the faster you get rid of those interest payments and the faster you can save for both your future and the future of your children.

Heritage auction is the way to go. Ask for at least 105% of the hammer price. Also may want to speak with them to determine which auction time is most appropriate for a coin like this. The summer ANA auctions seem like they'd be a great time if your friend would like to sell soon.

Amazing, that is awesome, that is so awesome!!! No real advice, but I would probably sell the coin as it so far outstrips my budget for collecting, and I would not want that much money tied up in one asset.

I want to say " We did it!". What a success story. Guy asks friends on a forum, about a very rare gold coin his friend wants to find info about. What to do and how to do it. Friends say" GET IT AUTHENTICATED " twice because he's pussyfootin' around. Finally he submits the coin to a TPG. There are hopes and fears. Is it real or an excellent counterfeit. Will it make a decent grade or get body bagged.
A week goes by. Everybody is waiting and waiting. Finally an email comes
from the TPG Imaging Dept. He can't look at first. Then he forces himself to look and expects the worst. He opens his eyes. He can't believe what he sees. It is authenticated and graded and slabbed to his highest hopes. And his friend lives happily ever after. Pure "Corn" but it fits this thread.
Some success story, huh. Well we lived it. Thanks one and all FRIENDS.

My God! I haven't been on the forums in a while but was excited to see that there were updates to this thread! All I can say is "jackpot"!!!

That is awesome. I am very happy for your friend and thankful that you could share this story with the forum. Stories like this don't come around too often.

As for what to do..... lol Oh boy! I'm glad I don't have to make that decision! The fact that it was passed down in the family makes it that much more harder to me. Not to mention that it'd have to feel pretty good to have a $50k coin tucked away! Now that'd be an avatar with instant bragging rights for a newbie. lol

If he does sell it, he could purchase a lot more gold with a large sum to spare.

Basically, the decision sucks!! I couldn't criticize any option he decides to take. Wish him the best of luck.
