I just lost out on a few coins at auction and thought it would be fun to see what others bid on but did not win. Only one rule for this thread: You must have actually bid on the coin you are sharing. It can’t just be a coin you saw at an auction and liked.
My wife nearly fainted when I admitted to having bid 50K (my auction limit with Stacks). I hurriedly told her that it would end up over 6 figures thereby saving my marriage--if not my life! It realized $138000 so for once she had to admit I was right.
I get in trouble every time I go to the ancients forum. I once saw a tetradrachm with Alexander’s bust with a lion headdress that I thought was the sexiest coin ever…… So I get my weekly Heritage email… And there it is. It was perfect. A bold and well centered bust. So I immediately put in what I thought was a strong bid for the coin. I started bragging and sent a text to @lordmarcovan and he very gently let me know I had put a tetradrachm size bid in for a drachm…. Or about a dime sized coin. Well phooey. I can’t see a dime without a loupe these days….. The coin Gods were looking out for me and someone outbid me by twenty bucks at the last minute… Whew!! Next time I will study before I bid…. Yeah, sure!
You still wouldn’t have done so bad on that, Randy. That’s a heckuva nice looking Alexander the Great drachm. While you overlooked the fact that it was a smaller denomination, you were right on target with the eye appeal. Which is #1 in my book. Some of the posthumous tetradrachms are really impressively large, though, if you want a big ‘un. Just note the mm diameters in the auction descriptions.
