Looked through about 35 rolls of cents tonight. Go six wheaties...all common. Also, scored a really neat 1973 that exhibits an off center strike. I'm also starting to keep all pre-1982 cents. I figure that base metals like copper are going to trend upwards. If they don't, then they will always hold face value. I'm going to fill up a 5 gallon pail full and use it to anchor my safe. I've also starting buying boxes of nickels from the bank and putting them away. Again, I would think that base metals are going to continue to trend upward. Who is to say that 20 years from now people won't be paying 10x face for the cents and nickels we use in commerce today? Crazier things have happened.
I think its back down to about 2.2 cents worth of copper in each cent. I figure I'm looking through them for die varieties and wheaties anyway so why not pick out the pre 1982's ? Not much trouble and could pay off down the road.
i started doing the same thing with pennies. i hate paying in change, and couldn't imagine doing anything with pennies. i got tons of pre-82s just waiting. when i was given most of my coin collection, there was a ton of wheat rolls. i try to restrain myself and only open 3 a night. i am running low an only got around 4 left:crying:. i am probably addicted to them rolls. i need to start detoxing from it...
Aside from finding a safe place to store them, I just don't see the downside of doing this. However, I see a potential for a huge upside. It would be great to sell nickel rolls you paid $2 for for $20 ten years from now, wouldn't it? Base metals are going to increase in value. I see it as part of diversifying my "portfolio". I have money in the market (401k) I also have some silver bullion and junk silver. If the market does well, I make money. If the market tanks, I have some precious and base metal holdings so I dont' get wiped out. If there is hyper inflation my metals increase in value, if the dollar is strong my stocks make money. I'm never going to be rich, but I'll never be poor, either. For me this is all just spreading the risk around and not putting all my eggs in one basket. Some of my cock-a-mamie schemes are going to work out and some aren't. Just like any other investment. I'm going to put away 3k worth of nickles and however many cents I come across roll pickin'. ( I do a $25.00 box per week) Then I'm just going to let it roll and see what happens.
