Oh coinDr....oh what a tangle web we weave...

 

Probably 10% or more of the forum knows how to, but few would admit it, and even very fewer would detail how it is done. The reason is that some people will hold that the person admitting or describing such a process of AT is a coin doctor, and every toned coin he offers will be construed to be AT. Anyone with even a slight chemistry background could figure it out and do it if they wished. As has been pointed out, no one can tell the difference between a NT coin and a Very good AT coin. Most of the colloquialisms ( even in the TPG's grading guide) as how to tell AT is only good for poor AT jobs. But if it is market acceptable, it is market acceptable as NT, is it not? Until someone invents a "way-back" machine to see if the coin underwent "evil" intent to accelerate the chemical process, we will be left with uncertainty.

I am sure that the best coin doctors are happy with the fact that so many can think they can tell any AT/NT coin with confidence.

 

true but most are ridiculous and most people are able to tell. but i will admit that some are really good at toning and doctoring pics

but your point is well taken; based on your experience, AT coins passed muster from TPGs.

 

Put the coin in pure acetone and light it on fire in a plastic container.... outside!

Good points, but unfortunately there is no way to go back. Its just doing the same chemical reactions but at an extremely accelerated speed.
However I dont think 10% is a reasonable rate.
Regardless, I dont condone AT.
And all my toned coins are natural, I have 72 Monster toned MS/AU mercs and rosies right now. I may sell them soon, I want an 1889 CC rainbow toned. or a 1893 S. Eitheir one I would be very happpy with.

 

Yup broke them out and dipped them back to blast white. I wasnt going to defraud anyone. I was more curious to test the TPG's.

I do have quite a few monster toned MS/AU mercs and rosies. Theyre my specialty, I love cherry picking them , or getting them for a steal.
the proof mercs always catch my eye. I cant avoid them. But I probably will sell them soon.

Got the wife part, if you consider a girlfirend one.
So its not impossible. I do have bags of the CC'S. I am just scared to open them and see what they reveal. What if a rainbow tone dmonster is there. What if its not. I prefer the suspense of not knowing, than knowing.

Bags of CC's? You must have an understanding wife/girlfriend - mine flinches every time another Colonial comes through the door. And she almost went Chernobyl on me two weeks ago when she found out my brother and I bought metal detectors...

Had them before I knew her, she wasn't fond of them until I sold off a bag and bought a house. Since then she hunts down bags for me. In charge of advertising, getting the bags for a good price ETC.
My last two bags were crazy good deals and she did it all.
No I wasn't aware bags of those existed, although I've have a bag with circulated large cents. And a 50 lb sack of Indian cents. Even a couple dimes, but I haven't bothered with them, since Carson city Morgans are my specialty.

 

I heard stories that Colonials and Pre-Federals used to sell for a few bucks a piece during the 60's and 70's... I have a few envelopes that came with purchases that have such prices on them... :bigeyes:

That seller on ebay always has a tone of fake toned coins up. Brings tears to my eye b/c he'll fake tone some pretty nice, tougher date coins. The savage...
