I found this rather interesting. Maybe that is because I am mostly into Lincolns, but let's see how the rest feel. Those of you who got the email, let the rest have a little fun before you spoil it for them.

See if you can guess the ten most frequently offered Lincoln Cents in Heritage auctions. For those of you who think the 1909-S VDB is rare, a hint. It is the exact opposite here. I or someone else, will post the answers here in the near future.

    No more, I guess. Here are the answers;

    1. 1909-S VDB: 2375.
    2. 1909 VDB: 1670.
    3. 1931-S: 1667.
    4. 1914-D: 1596.
    5. 1909-S: 1283.
    6. 1939: 1115.
    7. 1937: 1057.
    8. 1955 Doubled Die Obverse: 922.
    9. 1936: 912.
    10. 1942: 886.

    1939? 1937? 1936? 1942? I can understand most of them, but where is 1909? 1922?

I put together the list. It's nice to see some discussion; this means that somebody out there reads my stuff. :)

There are basically two things going on with the list. For obvious reasons, we go out of our way to offer key coins, which is why you see things like the 1909-S VDB and 1914-D at the top. We also, within the past few years, offered a huge number of coins from the Omaha Bank hoard, and this is why you'll see a lot of coins from the late 1930s to the 1940s show up in quantity. My guess about the 1909-VDB is simply that, like many other first year issues, they were saved in large quantities when they were first released and thus come nice.

The 1922 no D came close to making the list, probably 12th or so if I remember correctly (I did not keep anything below the top ten, and it's really difficult to recreate rankings). Because they bring very different money, I separated the Strong Reverse and Weak Reverse varieties; if combined, they would have ranked sixth.

Here are the raw figures for some of the other coins that people guessed in this thread:

    1910-S: 487
    1911-S: 363
    1922 no D, strong reverse: 797
    1922 no D, weak reverse: 348
    1924-D: 562
    1925: 329
    1926: 433
    1972 DDO: 661
1995 DDO: 861 (far and away the highest among Memorials)
