Ok so I am now in possetion of a 1971 black chrome penny. It is completely black and no traces of mint luster. I am not sure if I should attempt to clean it to see if it is real or just leave well enough alone. Any help is greatly apprciated. I will add pics soon.

Do you have a pic of it? there's nothing "natural" that will turn a copper penny black

I'm not sure about reaction on copper but if you put a silver coin in bleach it will turn black.

Without even seeing a picture I still have no doubt that your coin has been subjecting to something to enhance (or destroy) its color.

    PMD.

If you put a silver coin in a soda/salt water solution and run an electric current through it with a steel and copper electrodes, it will turn dark black right before your very eyes !

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

yea, i got like 100 cents from the 70's that are "black chrome'' or chromed. maybe it was a fad in the 70's?

i am afraid to touch them, in case they are dipped in mercury!

I think it was High School auto shops that produced most of them. I have a 53 that's electroplated
