German treasure hunters say they may have solved the decades-old mystery. Treasure hunters digging for gold in Deutschneudorf near Germany's border with the Czech Republic. Treasure hunters in Germany claim they have found hidden gold in an underground cavern that they are almost certain contains the Amber Room treasure, believed by some to have been stashed away by the Nazis in a secret mission in the dying days of World War II... ////////////////////////////////////////////////// Maybe they found the legendary Amber Room...
Now that is an interesting article! My wife and I just recently watched a program on TV about that Amber Room. All that gold is pretty awesome as well! Two tons of gold would work!!!:goofer: Keep us posted if you hear any more about this.
When we were in St. Petersburg a few years ago, the Russians were still very upset about loss of the Amber room. If I recall correctly, there is a replica at the Hermitage.
Keep in mind that Mr Haustein has been searching for the Amber Room in Deutschneudorf for ten years. According to most of the articles that I have seen about this in the past couple of days, many historians do not quite believe it's there. On the other hand, it sure makes a good story. And who knows, maybe maybe maybe ... Christian
In Zarskoje Selo ... ask E.ON Ruhrgas about it. Ruhrgas even showed an impressive virtual reconstruction of the Amber Room in Essen. By the way, if he finds anything there, the state of Saxony would first get it. Christian
I stand corrected. Glad I hedged my original statement, but after all, remembering anything about a trip more than three years ago is quite an accomplishment at my age!
Actually I wasn't sure either - that is why I edited my previous post shortly after sending it. Here are some pictures from Deutschneudorf, taken as from Feb 7 when the current digging project started (latest images first): http://www.freiepresse.de//TREFFPUNKT/BILDERGALERIEN/3272/diashow/index.shtml Click on « or » to see the previous/next picture, or click on the little traffic light guy to start or stop the slide show. Well, there is not that much to see, except some people, some instruments and a hole in the ground ... Christian
I don't know about this situation, but Scientists and experts tend to be snobs and skeptics about any find by anyone not in the elite group.
Look at the date this thread was started. Has there ever been any follow up story confirming the first story about a huge treasure being found ? What does that tell you ?
The wikipedia article on the Amber Room led me to this article: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TECH/science/02/28/nazi.gold/index.html Apparently, they've called the search off.
There was a show about this on the History channel sometime late last year. I think it was an episode of "Solving History With Olly Steeds" but don't hold me to that. The show featured one of the above mentioned treasure hunters near the end Here's a clip: http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/solving-history-the-amber-room-trail.html
