So, just how rare is the 1919 DDO dime?

These hoards show up when you are in the right place at the right time. If I had a cherry pick like that. I wouldn't tell ya, and I would probably wouldn't answer either. But anyways.
I have a bag of 63P Lincolns. The study of the coins has been so fun that I will keep nearly all of the coins, Roll em up all Red/RB for future reference. Thats easily how these small hoards begin.

I understand completely and respect your position. As I've tried to convey repeatedly I get why someone wouldn't want to share that type of information.

If the roles were reversed I might not tell either. However, I would simply reply that I'm not comfortable sharing that type of information. I wouldn't pull the Sergeant Schultz routine and pretend I know nothing.

The arrangement that allowed me to search these is confidential. That is why I am evasive.

The hoard was assembled from multiple sources, of which I do not know the locations. That is why I said I did not know where these coins were compiled.

My theory is that they were released away from the east and west coasts, where there wouldn’t be dealers saving BU rolls or many coin collectors checking their change for interesting finds. The would explain why 1) it wasn’t discovered contemporaneously and 2) so few of them grade above G. They all entered circulation and were used as nothing special, and higher grade specimens survived only by chance.

    Reasonable questions.

I remember a similar type situation, when I was very young. What was occurring was the "searcher" found a gazillion same date same denomination coins, of which there was a known "rarity". The "searcher" claimed he had been offered the opportunity to go thru the coins, under the condition there would be no mention of where the coins were located/how accumulated, etc. There were not many of the rarity pieces known at the time. All of a sudden, the "searcher" had 17 (all legitimate) and surmised there were many many more, and it was not as rare as previously thought. The going price dropped in value for a while, in the local area-DC.

Always made me wonder if the "searcher" bought the known pieces at a reduced price, or was sincere in helping the average hobbyist, or a Dealer.

The coin: 64 AH Kennedy 1/2 Dollar.

    So....who knows?

Thanks for the clarification @TypeCoin971793. I completely understand and respect that you can't share the details.

Edited because I replied to the wrong message.

I finally got around to searching my 1919 dimes, I have three of them. Alas, none were doubled dies, but thanks for enlightening me as to their existence.

I got to use the nifty loupe the ANA gifted me, and use the word "alas", so it wasn't a total loss.

So in my last post on this forum, I talked about the relationship I have with my lcs. Checked the last three rolls of mercury dimes that I have bought and found 1 1919. Not the ddo but I know that I have more. Now I need to search my rolls 51B6D716-1BAF-496E-A684-3B27E16EBC55.jpeg
