What do you guys think of this slab? Who graded this coin?

It looks like an ANACS label except that it doesn't have the ANACS in the lower left corner, so what other company would have used the white ANA background label?

That's what I found interesting... I looked at the oldest anacs labels and they were identical in every way except they say anacs on the lower left front but also, the site I looked it up on said it was very rare to see anything larger than a dime in one.... I actually got this locally from a pretty reputable young guy who was given this by his grandfather, so it caught my eye more than if I had seen it selling on ebay from a seller in china. :) [IMG]

In fact, here is the holographic back of the slab. It certainly appears authentic to this rookie.... thoughts?

It sure doesn't look like any ANACS holder that I have ever seen.

Conder101 would definitely know. Send him a PM and you'll know for sure.

Don't have the book handy to look it up right now but I believe that is one of the first ANA slabs - before ANACS, as we know it, even existed.

This is the first case of "buy the slab NOT the coin" that I've ever seen.
The slab is worth more than the coin.

That's the original label of the ANA before they switched to ANACS. Quite old.

Conder would know for sure. As Numis47 said, it's probably one of the earliest slabs before ANACS broke away from the ANA.

    Cool find!

It's real. This was the last of the ANACS versions before they were sold to Amos Press. At this time they were still run by the ANA. This slab was used from 1989 until the sale to Amos Press and I don't recall when that was likely 1990 or 1991. The slab is a neat bit of numismatic history, but I don't know of anyone who pays any type of premium for this holder. This was at least the eleventh version of an ANACS holder/certificate, but the first that was encapsulated. Most of this information was obtained from Conder101's book on the history of certification of coins.

Wow, thanks guys for the information. Yeah, I don't know that I would have slabbed the coin either, but I am glad to learn the history...

That is a cool piece of grading history. I wonder if 50 years down the road if this slab would be worth some money since it was one of the first

As usual I'm gone for a few days and a slab question comes up.

Thanks to everyone who jumped in and handled the question for me.

As mentioned this is the last ANACS variety before the company was purchased by Amos Press in Feb of 1990 This slab was apparently only used in late 1989 and very early 1990. They are seldom seen anymore but I wouldn't call them rare yet. Most of the coins that were in them have been cracked out over the years or crossed over. Is far as I know there is no special scarcity to coins larger than dimes in these holders. In fact I would think that since more dollars were slabbed than any other coin dollars would probably still be the most common survivors.

Thanks for the response... Actually I just misread something posted on sampleslabs.com before I posted this... The example they show is a SAMPLE slab and only smaller coins were put in the sample slabs from my understanding... Got the same answer from the webmaster of that site, that it is an ANACS slab before they were officially known as ANACS...
