Just wondering different people's views on this: if you had a hole in say a Jefferson year and mint mark set, that was a harder to find but still common coin, and you found an example in a condition that was well under your usual standards, would you keep it to fill the hole, or pitch it knowing you could do better? Example: you found a 1941-S with Jefferson's face worn flat, and no triangle on the dome of Monticello. You only need that coin and a 1950-D to complete the set. Keep it or pitch it?
ya, keep it as a temporary hole filler. I do that with all of my circulated sets Im putting together. You never know how long it will be until you find a better example of that year and MM. For a while I had a nasty Kennedy Half. I want to say that it was a 1983P, but it had someone's initials "sharpied" onto the obverse. Nasty. I used it as a hole filler for about 2 weeks until I finally found another 83P. But if I never found that better one, the nasty one would have been my only example of what Ive personally found in circulation.
Ditto!! Keep it and look for an upgrade, atleast you have one, And thats Better then none in my book!
If collecting from circulation only, definitely keep it. It might be many years before a roll searcher and/or change searcher finds another one. If buying from dealers, forget about it. There is no need to settle on low quality for a relatively common coin, unless a person has absolutely zero money to buy coins.
Definately keep it because it gives you the satisfaction of having a complete set and then just constantly look for an upgrade. Good luck finding it BTW
