Hi everyone, I've been collecting coins very casually since I was a child, but recently got more into it. I work as a cashier right now while I'm in college, and it's given me the chance to aquire a lot of interesting coinage and currency for face value, which has been great. The most sizable part of my collection is the wheat pennies I have amassed. I take any that I receive out of circulation, even low-value one, but the ones I'm happiest about are the 1909-1929 ones. So far I have just under 500 '29 and prior wheat cents that I've taken out of circulation. I store them in paper rolls, wrapped in a ziploc bag, in bubble wrap. Is this decent long-term storage, or will the paper rolls damage the coins over time? Most of them actually came in rolls--I'm not sure why anyone would be willing to spend an entire roll of pre 1930 wheat cents at face value, but I'm not complaining.
It's nice to see more folks interested in the hobby. I have been taking Wheat cents out of circulation for years, too, and simply toss them in a jug.
What is important here is if there is anything else in that jug. Now if that is full of good booze, your probably going to get sick the first time you have a drink. If it's also full of gasoline, remember to pour carefully when filling your lawn mower. Not sure about you but to me a jug is noted by that stuff called Moonshine. Hope your not wasting that good stuff with a bunch of coins. As to the original question about long term storage. Not sure why so many do that. Of course I'm on the elderly side so long term storage means little to me. And if you think about it, who are you long term storing them for? Sort of reminds me of a car I had. I bought it new, Placed seat covers on the seats, floor mats over the carpeted floor. Even placed a blanket in the trunk so the trunk would get dirty. Eventually sold that car and the guy that bought it distroyed it in a wreck the first week. Still had the seat covers on too. So why are you storing those coins?
I put mine in plastic whitman tubes. I've busted open a paper roll one too many times. A few picking them up off the floor and I'm willing to spring for tubes for now.
I have kept everything for about 15 years and the funny part is I only started collecting about six months ago. So am I more or less sick than you?
