You can also flip them, like flipping a coin, the copper will ring, the zinc will be silent. My kids love helping me, it is hilarious
Or drop them on a hard surface (not AU or better, of course). The copper will have a high pitched "Tink" and the zinc will just go "Thud."
Im slowly hoarding copper pennies. I probably only have around $100 face in copper pennies saved right now, maybe more. Definitely not as crazy as some of the other folk on realcent (other forum). I must admit though...it is tempting to buy a Ryedale and go nuts for a year or so...
It really makes little sence to hoard them. People constantly say how much a Copper coin is worth for Copper. OK so now just where are you going to get that amount? So you save and save and now you have tons of them. So where are you going to toke them for the Copper value? Even if Copper prices made them worth $0.10 each, where are you going to get that? Many metal recyclers will take them but only give you a few cents per coin. Could have got more on ebay in one of those UNSEARCHED COIN STORIES. It sort of reminds me of my kid saving those stickers and he used to tell me how much they are worth. Then he grew up.
Bob here's what I found: A Ryedale is a machine that sorts copper cents from the zinc cents heres their website http://www.ryedalecoin.com/Gallery.html
pay for the use of a furnace and make youre own copper ingots? i will say if those bins of cents lincolnhoardr has arent all copper ... have fun.
