How much do they make? Take a look at a recently canceled show called Orange County Choppers. See where they were before and where they are now.. Look fast because that New Shop is awesome and I am afraid somebody else is going to own it soon now that the show has been canceled and money problems are ruining the family
The thing I like about Rick and the thing that impresses me the most about his shop is you will see people come in a lot and say they are trying to get somewere along the lines of $300-$400. Rick says he wants to bring in an expert and instead of taking the expert to the side and asking how much it is worth, he asks in front of the customer. A lot of times the number has been several thousands and now Rick pays the person $2000-$3000 instead of what the guy was originally hoping for. I think that is cool and he is not trying to rip people who do not know what they have off.
i was thinking more of the reverse. alot of ppl take stuff in that they expect thousands for until an expert tells them they got a replica or something not nearly as rare in which case they usually take it home.
I dont mind an honest mark up! And a man making a living but when Were talking about a 200% and way above that mark up,s, Making It on the back,s of hard working Americans who are down and out Especially in this economy who need money giving them pennies On the dollar sure they could walk out right over to the welfare office!
How many people do you know that collect, buy or sell coins that visit the welfare office. If you do know any, they have misdirected priorities. We are talking about specialty items, not bread. Thanks for letting me know that I'm not a hard working American.
People are comparing this pawn shop to others. This is a TV show. If it's on the show, I betcha Rick and them have no control over what is bought or sold. The show probably foots the bill if something is bought. I'm almost positive the show rounds up all these oddball people with their oddball stuff...if these guys are even real customers or just actors. Selling fighter plane ejection seats bring in more ratings than someone pawning their high school class ring because they lost too much at the casino. These so called experts, if they are real, wouldn't bother going to anyone's shop to appraise anything unless there is something in it for them. Maybe it's free advertising, or a check in the mail...nobody's gonna do it for free. This is reality TV. The wilder the better...whether it's selling Soviet ICBM launch keys to a pawn shop or singing "Pants on the Ground" on American Idol. Just like Judge Judy, there might be a winner and loser on the show, but NOBODY walks away empty-handed. Yeah, this pawn shop is legit, but would they really buy an old sundial from you if there were no Pawn Stars?
Take this in to consideration people spend years building there coin Collections and suddenly find themselves out of job, Your options Are few what do you do, Go see Rick?....Not sure if that would be Your best option, Sometimes i guess you dont have a choice
I enjoyed the episode where Rick told a guy with a museum quality item "Yeah, but Museums don't pay for stuff". I guess it depends on what the stuff is right ? Like MPC says, those here in Las Vegas do take what seems an unfair advantage. But on the show, no one seems to want to pawn their stuff. Of course pawn values are pretty low too, from what I hear. Like $25 for a $100 item (market value)
LOL.... I saw that episode. He marked a CC for like $500 when it was supposed to be like a couple of thousands or something. His son told him to get glasses.
When I checked out the coins at the shop, there wasn't anything that really interested me so I did not try to negotiate. Coins are just a small very small part of their inventory. Lots of jewelery. I have a few fellow coin collectors who have done very well buying at pawn shops. They were buying key date coins - its possible the shop was not aware of their value. I think pawn shops do have their value - quick cash if someone is in a bind and for those who like to buy - you never know what you might find.
Who say's that he doesn't have the "expert's" just say tell me it's worth 1/2 of what it is no matter what it is. That way it's even more profit and the peron is more likely to sell.
Unfortunately, in Las Vegas it speaks louder than anyplace else I have ever been. Maybe it has the loudest voice in the world ?
I went to Pawn Stars Was just there March 28, 2010. Much smaller than it looks on TV and I didn't see any coins for sale at all! Mostly jewelry, statues, knives & swords. Did get to meet ChumLee and take pics with him. Bought some signed shot glasses for $4.95 each. If you're a fan of the show, it was worth it just to meet ChumLee. He was pretty funny and low key just like he appears on the show. If you're looking to buy coins, fuhgeddaboutit!! It's on Las Vegas Blvd about a mile north of the Stratosphere Tower and a few blocks south of Freemont Street. Take the Deuce bus downtown and get off at Charleston. Walk north about a block. It's on the right side. You'll see the line of people outside the door.
I was looking on youtube. You stand in line. If you're pawning or selling, they let you in first. If you're just looking, you get two minutes to look around.
What can you do in two minutes! Sounds like the history channel needs to Get Rick and the old man a bigger store !
Hmmm, I've been there numerous times and never had to wait in line or have a time limit. Maybe thats a weekend thing. I avoid the tourist areas during the weekend. Guy~
Pawn Stars Lines Last week on Tuesday about 5:00 PM there was a line to get in (about 30 people) so we skipped the visit and went back on Friday at 10:00 AM and walked right in. It was a little crowded but no one was rushing us out and we had time to look around. The coins are near the entrance on the right (as you are headed out the door) in an area that is roped off. I did not see them at first when I walked in but did see the area as I was leaving. Towards the back of the store the guys (Rick, Chumlee and the Old Man) were talking with tourists and having their pictures taken. The store is long - there are the cases and counters that are shown on TV and then there is an area in the back where they had a few motor cycles for sale.
