hello guys found this 1995 dime today i measured it its 4 mm thicker than a normal dime also it has the edgemarks on the side the another layer then edge marks on the outer edge as is supposed to.also it has silver and copper on outside edge but the copper is in the middle with silver on both sides the coper is sandwiched in the middle?any clues ?
it looks like a blank planchet got stuck against another dime and then struck to make it thicker and could explain why there is edge marks in the rim then on the outside
I can't tell from the pictures, but it sounds like you may have a "spooned" coin. These are typically thicker, but smaller in diameter. If you have a pair of calipers, or any other accurate measuring device, check the diameter of your coin. Basically what happens is that somebody who is bored, with a lot of time on their hands, beats the rim of a coin with another object (a spoon, for example), thereby making the coin smaller in diameter and thicker. In the case of your coin, some of the edge reeding may have been beaten to the surface of the coin, creating the marks you see on the upset portion of the rim.
good theory but not the case lol its normal diameter and the outside marks are mint no damage i been around coins for a while and just cant see how this happened
I strongly doubt that your dime is 4 millimeters thicker than normal. It is perhaps slightly thicker as the result of a strike that was slightly stronger than normal. This would cause the coin metal to completely fill the rim gutter of each die and can also raise a "fin" around the edge. The edge will look correspondingly thicker. The pattern of serrations you detect on the rim on the right side is simply collar clash.
Better take a science class that will give you a better grounding in the metric system. 4 cm thicker would be over 1 1/2 inches thick. Much more likely would be .4 mm thicker and even that would be a little questionable.
lol since when is 4 cm over 1 and a half inches lol?any way i will post a side by side comparison tonight its just different its not pushed in its flat across the surface on both sides it has nickleplating on both sides on the edge copper in the center most dimes are only copper then nickel
Jesse, To the best of my recollection of what the nuns taught me, 2.54 centimeters = 1 inch. Therefore, 4 cm is just over 1 1/2 inches. Don't be disrespectful when people are trying to help you. It does not benefit anyone.
Well you have to admit my crack about taking a science class WAS a little disrespectful. But considering he still thinks 4 cm is less than 1 1/2 inches.....
i come on here and talk about coins i have tens of thousands of coins and bills in my collection.i like sharing some and some im not sure i surf on here but the last thing i need is someone wanting to start kid wars on coin talk.its ok to correct someone if they are mistaken but i come here to talk to pros not amateurs.e .evryone looks for flaws someone types other than the topic itself.the coin!but i found out the cause so its getting spent in a parking meter if it will fit.sounds like some people need classes in human relations....
if you post a picture of it next to a regular dime, it might help, to show the difference. most people here have to see pictures to see what is going on... hope this helps.
you are correct i found out the cause and have no reason to further this old post thank you for your thoughts on the matter though.
