Just picked these commems up to go into my set. I don't know that I'll ever complete it but I'll give it a good shot. Anyway, I grabbed these for a grand total of $710, which I don't think was too bad of a price. What do y'all think.
I'll be the wet blanket and tell you that I really don't like these two coins at $710 combined. The Lincoln might be AU58, but if it isn't it is still limited to MS62-MS63, which gives it an upside in my opinion of about $130-$140. The Antietam has a very high basal price and these can come extraordinarily nice in MS65 or better, which only adds perhaps $150 to the price. However, this one might have a spot of PVC on the middle of the obverse, or perhaps it is just loosely adhered gunk, but it also has MS62-MS63 eye appeal. As such, it might be $625-$650 for the coin. While these values add up to more than the $710 spent, I think if you ever try to sell the coins, and we all sell coins at times that we never planned to sell when we purchased them, you may find resistance in the sales since these are common coins in higher grades for only a few dollars more. In other words, I don't think you purchased the value grade for each coin and this might hurt upon resale.
I like the Antietam. Not sure I see that "gunk" that TomB sees -- maybe a spot but I can't tell that it is PVC. I think it's better than a 62-63, by the way. Anyway, as long as you like them, that's what matters. Enjoy them.
Nice commems. I too am slooooowly putting together a set. I've got the Illinois already, but not the Antietam. That coin would fit VERY WELL into my set. Nice going.
I appreciate your candor, I really do, not enough people provide constructive criticism when it comes to coins. However, while the Lincoln may someday leave my hands, as you said we all sell coins we never planned to I am prepared to take the hit, I never collected certain coins for making money. But, as a military related coin the antietam will never leave my collection. I am slowly, very slowly putting together a set of all military type commems both older and modern and when I am done, if I ever am, they will go into a display case along with my challenge coins. But I did talk the seller down from $860 to $710 using the arguments you used. The Antietam indeed has a spot on it, but I am planning to give it an acetone dip as it just appears to be a loose piece of gunk. We'll see.
Nice comm'em pickups BQ. I'm not seein' the gunk that TomB See's on the Antietam, but then again my glasses are a bit dusty. I think it would rate at least a '65.....:thumb:
It's a spot on Gen. Lee's nasolabial fold. To me, looks more like folder residue. The Antietam looks pretty nice from where I sit.. not nearly as baggy as the Lincoln. Maybe these were handled differently and went straight into the cardboard holders. I bought mine from the Reeded Edge, I think it looks nicer than other example they had, which graded higher.
