Afternoon Guys and Gals. I picked these two coins up today at a local show and thought it would be fun to guess the grade on 'em. The Iowa is slabbed in a PCGS holder....the Carver is "raw". Lets see what you folks think....
I couldn't grade a coin if my life depended on it. However, Those are really nice. I'll give them an A. LOL
I think those are two nice ones. I'll say MS66 for the Iowa and MS65 for the Washington Carver. I do wonder about those curving parallel lines on the Washington Carver -- die polish? Anyway, nice coins. Every time I see nice commems like these, I think I am going to start collecting them. Haven't made the jump yet.
Opus, take a stab at it. We're workin' from pics here as opposed to workin' with a coin in hand. Don't feel that if you give a grade, and it's not correct, that you are somehow deficient in your grading abilities. It's all in the learning experience and, remember, you are among friends. Nobody is going to "slime" you if you are not dead on.
Iowa: 66, maybe a 67 if the luster is incredible. Carver: 65, looks like most of the sig. hits are on the rev.
LOL. Green, I have nothing to compare them to. I know they are 64 or better because I can't find flaws. I just know they are beautiful and I would be proud to have them in my collection.
Oh dear, there are indeed flaws with both the Carver and the Iowa. Check out the reverse of the Carver. There are hits on Wyoming , Florida and South Carolina........
I've been to all three States. Lots of Humidity in Florida and South Carolina. Wyoming can be bitter cold and dry in the Winter. LOL Well. I could see Rhode Island. Green. I don't have a clue and don't pretend to either. LOL You could hit me with a dead fish and I would still be clueless.
If I submitted them to PCGS, I'd probably get them back as "GENUINE"! With my luck, they'd get scratched during shipping, jammed in a postage machine or burned in a fire at the post office. The Iowa obverse looks better than the reverse to me so I'm gonna guess MS64 on that one. The Carver looks like it has small abrasions on the obverse predominantly on the face so I'll guess MS-63 on that one. Either way, they both look nice and have great lustre. I wouldn't mind having em!
A lot of the Iowa commems I see all look about the same. It has something to do with the fact that the entire mintage sold out very quickly. Being right next to Iowa I see many, many of these which is why I will call this one an MS65. The carver IMO is a MS63.
The results? Like I said in the OP, the Carver/Washington is "raw", but the dealer had MS-63 marked on the 2x2. It does have stiking luster, but I think the hits on Wyoming, SC, and Florida (reverse) would preclude this coin from getting a higher grade. Iowa? See below......
