Well, as the title mentioned this is a monumental post for me. Today I went to the coin store and stepped into two strange worlds...one of Franklin Halves, other of toned coins. This is the first time I'll be sharing photos of my first Franklins. Instead of taking up a lot of space with the photos on here you are more than welcome to visit them at the photobucket link listed below. Just a preface about the photos: I don't have a camera. These coins are scanned and really don't do them all too much justice for terms of luster and tone as light is really needed to see those aspects. Also, some of the fine details may be a bit shady, but I did my best in adjusting the preferences of the scan. Also, any comments you want to make about the coins feel free to make them, positive or negative. I took great time and deliberation over these and they will always be treasured in my eye no matter what comments you can provide. Besides, it will serve as a good learning opportunity for me. I know what I would grade them; I know what the dealer grades them, so your feedback will, as always, be valued. Today was also a great Merc dime day. I found the variation of 1928S I've been hunting for some time. Even though the small is not in a condition the rest of my album is in, it was definately worth the buy, especially when they were both in the same lot. I also found two toned Mercs. Again, doesn't match the rest of my gray/brilliant white silver collection, but my first thought on looking at them was, "Well, that's different!" So it was an impusle buy. I know very little about toning and I know I definately can't tell if it's artificial or not. My guess is that they were toned from being in an album. They are consecutive years. One is toned on the obverse, the other on the reverse. Both of them are hued bright green and scarlet...rather Christmas festive if you ask me. Sorry, no pics of these as the scanner didn't show the tone at all.

Well, this is my first step to an uncirculated set of Franklins. Special thanks to the coin dealer for the patience and to you guys on cointalk for your help. Special thanks to physicsfan for providing the very informative link to his set. Now, without further delay, the pics. Enjoy!

Cool! Welcome to another series to become fascinated by; I recently started dabbling in Franklins too (see post in eye candy thread) and there are so many variations in color and "look" that they can become addictive. Beware!

    Yep. Good show.

I love Frankies, and they have sooo many facits.

From the git~go I found them bland. But the more I look, the more I see.

    ThanX for sharing.

Thanks for sharing them with us.

The entire time I was reading your post, I was thinking about Jason's registry set at NGC. I was also thinking that for someone like yourself, just starting Franklins, that he would be the perfect person to help you along. As a matter of fact, you almost don't need his help because the explanations he has provided with every coin in his set provides much of what you need to know.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Very nice, and a great start to your set. Are you going to be putting them in an album? I'm glad that my set has helped you - there is no higher compliment that you can give me.

It's exciting to get into a new series and is quite a bit more rewarding when there are those who have been around a while who are willing to help. You are quite fortunate to have found Franklin half dollars interesting to you and to be able to draw upon the resources of others such as Jason with his set. I'm not a huge Franklin half fan, but I have been a toning nut for many years.

Very nice start. I know from watching Jason and a few others putting together great sets of Franklins that this could be a life long project. Jason is for sure a person to emulate. His knowledge is among the top in the series and definitely belies his young age. Good luck in your new series.

The dealer had them in plastic flips, but I like to record what I paid for the coin and when I bought it which is quite difficult on plastic. So, I transfered them to 2.5x2.5 mylar flips and will put them in the plastic coin holding page I have that way I can view/analyze the obverse and reverse whenever I please.
