With only the information provided, it could be just someone playing around with a punch set.

It would be nice to have a larger picture of the item it's on and know the location of this indentation.

I can't immagine why, but it appears to be someone trying to make an "S" mint into a "D" mint. Gave up when they couldn't get the metal to move around right.

Or else it was the first guess and it is a punch job.

Well shoot... thought I had found something.. looked like a D over S to me... OldDan, how could someone do that? "get the metal to move around"???

It's not difficult, you take a small sharp tool and actually carve the metal. But in this case I think someone has actually removed the original mint mark and tried to add two more, one on top of the other, in its place.

ok GDJMSP, got a lot to learn don't I... Well I sure thought it was real  ... seems to me if someone was to want to go to all that trouble, they would at least do it to a coin know to have a D/S Seems everytime I think I got something... I don't :(
Thanks again for the help... cho cho :)

It's not hard to see if you know what you're looking at. Look at the pics you posted - the one at the very bottom is perhaps the best. See that dark area around the mint mark - it shouldn't be there. That's where someone carved away the metal - and did a very poor job of it.
