Is ebay the best place to purchase notes? Also is there a red book on paper money or could you recommend a book that would help someone new to paper money. Also are there any web sites that could help. Thanks Beck I noticed that Heritage Auctions has a great selection of buy it now and best offer notes for sale and all of there notes are graded.
Now Beck...we all welcome you to the Paper Monry fourm...... One of the neat things is to do the research on where the notes can be found. You wouldbe surprised at the info source available to you at this very moment! So as not to be rude, I will say this. http://www.telecoins.com/books/uspaper.html for a good book location site and on the Paper itself..well the hunt begins now right? Good luck and always read, read, read before you buy, buy buy!! RickieB
Welcome! eBay is a good place to buy notes, however I probably wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best. You can find some amazing deals there, but you can just as easily wind up overpaying for something if you aren't familiar with what you're looking at. As for books, that list RickieB directed you to is a good starting point. My favorite book by far on that list is The Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Paper Money. If you obtain that one, make sure you get the 7th edition as it is much improved over the previous....also, the 6th was printed over 10 years ago! My second favorite book is the Red Book. I also keep a copy of the Blackbook price guide at work just because it's cheap and easy to throw in a desk drawer. Here's a few of my favorite resources to help get you started. Super informative site on small size currency. Make sure you click Site Map as some great info is buried in there that you might otherwise miss. http://www.uspapermoney.info/ Another interesting general info site, primarily focused on smalls size notes...as am I. http://www.friesian.com/notes.htm Online price guide. Sort of rough and simple, but good for a quick lookup when you don't have access to anything else. http://www.ewebnation.com/swcgs/Currency_Price_Guide/Currency_Price_Guide_index.html Interesting overview on grading standards. Not sure how accurate, but I like the pictures! Also has some general price ranges on large size notes. Can't vouch for their accuracy though as my focus is on small size notes. http://www.oldcurrencyvalues.com/GradingCurrency.html Finally, to help you browse places to spend your money, an interesting link on the Collectors Universe Paper Money Forums (the only other decent forums I've found besides this one) which consolidates posts on where to buy currency: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=23&threadid=401912&highlight_key=y&keyword1=spend
alot of good comments have allready been said Ebay is a great tool, but yes, not the best. Alot of great deals can be had, and alot o really really BAD deals can be found! The best thing you can do for yourself is to steer clear of Ebay for a while. Get some books, and learn the tricks of the trade. There are so many bad notes on ebay that are misrepresented, that go for alot more then they should have! Most of us have a deal or two like that. Heritage and alot of other sites ahve alot of deals to be found as well. And with a lot less 'mistake' buys like Ebay can have. Always remember - if you are looking at a note that is a high ticket tiem for you, and you are questioning if it is worth it, if it is real or anything else... always remember you can ask us here be carefull abotu posting the link to the item you are lookign at... sometimes someone else may want it too but you can alwasy post the picture good luck!
Ebay can be a wonderful place to pick up notes but a lot would depend on what you are after, If you want the sort of stuff that Rickie displays then I would say stay away from Ebay much to dangerouse if on the other hand you are just looking for world notes low end ones then dive in and have fun but remember to allways read the feedback comments on a seller dont just look at the numbers. Also compare not just the price of a note but the shipping cost, if you have a question email the seller and if you doint get a satisfactory response then dont buy. If you ever need help then you can allways ask us guy's for a opinion :high5:
I'm new to collecting as well, so take my comments lightly I personally think the best place to start collecting currency is through circulation. Haha I know it sounds funny, but I've found a couple 1950 notes and the sort through circulation, and that's what sparked my interest. That, and I know I can't overpay that way! Haha but seriously, this site has taught me a TON so far and I'm only scratching the surface. The people on this site are VERY knowledgeable and very willing to share what they know. P.S. I have the redbook for U.S. Currency, not sure how good it is compared to others because it's the only one I have, but it seems good to me?
That is perfectly fine if you live in the USA but over here in the UK notes go out of circulation and are replaced with new designs quite often. Then you have the problem of been able to afford world travel for those nice little notes from Turkmenistan or Haiti LOL Sorry coudnt resist
e-bay e-bay is nice if your after the so-called "$1 notes" It is pretty easy to find the easier banknotes from all over the world on e-bay. There are a couple of people selling banknotes that dont know anything about what they have and you can get some really really good deals!
Welcome!!!! I have been quite new at this as well. The way I have used Ebay is as a learning tool. I have low bid on quite a lot of notes just to see where the price goes. That takes patience, but it gives you more a sense of what is a good deal. I have to tell myself that there will always be more. Currently, I'm trying to assemble a US $1 note typeset. My next purchases will be the 1935 North African yellow seal and the 1935 Hawaii note. I'll have to save up for the 1918 large size one after that. I have bid on and watched the price on at least 20 notes for all three of the above. Now, as I know what the current market on ebay is, I will use the above resources to do some more research. Good luck, paper collecting is quite fun!
