Is this worth having graded ?

I took this to a local coin dealer a few weeks ago to see what it would cost me to have graded and slabbed. He told me more than the coin was worth, but he would give me $35 for it.

    Is he right ?

    Thanks

If it's real it's worth about 4 times that. Is their any way to get a better pic of the mintmark?

Unless the coin is altered or otherwise fake (which an offer of $35 suggests is not the case) -- the dealer was likely trying to lowball you.

Yes, I think the coin is worth sending in, but like the Dutchman, I'd love to see higher-resolution photos first....Mike

Yes, we need to see a close-up of the mintmark. The first thing I think of when I see a dark area around the mintmark is that it may have been soldered in place on a 32 Philly.

Well some of the mint marks on these kind of appear to sit in a hole on the original pieces as well.

I am almost certain it has not been altered. This was the American Coin Co. here in Las Vegas. I was told it would cost about $40 to have it graded. As I was leaving, they took another look and told me they could give me $60, but they already had several of them in the back.

I scanned this. Let me try it with a higher resolution. I haven't had a lot of luck with my camera yet. Can't get the macro focus and the lighting just right. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks, especially when there's no trainer. LOL

    Thanks again

I'm not saying it is altered, but I'd like to be sure.

It's tough to tell from the scans if the mintmark is genuine or added to the coin. Assuming this is a genuine 1932-S WQ then one in this grade should be worth $200+ dollars in problem-free AU. The cost to certify will depend on the tier chosen, but if you go to an authorized submitter then you can use the economy level and this should be about $20.

At least you now know a shop to avoid.

Run, Forrest, RUN!! You will probably get a better offer from the Pawn Stars, also in Las Vegas.

Hey, I am not upset with the dealer. We are in a desperate recession here right now. I cannot imagine that his sales are very much at all, even if he is using on-line auctions, etc. Most people going into the shops to sell right now are really hurting. He likely can't sell it, so he has to sit on it for who knows how long. I knew the coin is worth a whole lot more than $35. But I was surprised when he made a second examination and nearly doubled the price ? And when sellers come in, he needs cash on hand to take their stuff. Maybe I hit him on a bad day ?

Personally, I don't think I could do things this way, But I am not paying any rent either.

I got this, at 2400 pixels, but I just cannot take a decent pic with my cam. Maybe I need to set it to a smaller size or something. When I tried with 7.0 mega pixels, it would not zoom after I uploaded it ? All this new fangled stuff is making me crazy. LOL

    Thanks for looking guys.

Don't kid yourself. The dealer knew exactly what he was doing and he sized you up as someone who might not realize what he had and who would be willing to take a lowball offer. A legitimate 1932-S WQ in AU is an easy sale on ebay even if he doesn't want to sell it at full retail. This coin would make him instant profit.

Maybe, but I really like to give everyone the benefit of doubt. Although, had a more equitable offer been extended, I was in need of some supplies for sorting through my junk, and I would have bought from him.

No I won't ever go back over there, either. But I certainly do not want to run the guy down. That is not my intent. I just don't know whether I should spend the money for grading, or leave it raw for the time being ?

Well, if graded the coin is for sure authentic and you'll have a better idea of what it is worth.

Yes. Now I just need to learn how to go about that. I know the PCGS site I saw on-line seemed pretty expensive ?

Well, that's gotta tell ya something. And don't believe for a second that he's got more in the back.

Upload that image to photobucket. Once there you can resize the photo so that you will be able to post a larger image here. This site restricts the size of your original photos. Also, if you've got XP as an OS, you can download power toys re sizer from Microsoft. Employing power toys would negate the necessity of using photobucket....

He almost doubles the offer as you're walking out? I smell nacho cheese Dorito breath.

If indeed your specimen is genuine, he significantly low balled you, and IMO he knew exactly what he was doing. He could flip that specimen in a second on ebay for much more, regardless of how tight the economy is right now.

Others have had good things to say about the shop, so maybe I caught them on an off day? Anyway, after looking at it and making an offer, kind of authenticated it didn't he ?
