Hello everyone, Today I want to show 2 neat Mint Errors I acquired from Fred Weinberg and 2 different coin shows he attended. He had a lot of amazing Mint Errors and it's sad to know that he has retired from the world of errors. I hope he's enjoying his retirement! I have shown these in the past. For the new CoinTalk members.. Enjoy! 1 Cent struck on 10 Cent Planchet. It's a clad planchet intended for a Dime. 5 Cent struck on 1 Cent Planchet. Same size, width and weight of a Cent Planchet. It's not Environmental Toning. I also acquired this 2 errors from him Here are some cool pictures of Fred and myself This is Fred's Book This is @Fred Weinberg when he was younger!
Hey Ed.... I am not an error guy. You know that.. I was wondering. The cent that is struck on a dime planchet... Did the cent design fully strike up on the smaller dime planchet?
Great question! Where it says IN GOD WE TRUST is cut off. The planchet is smaller so it sat in the chamber towards the bottom. When I get home I will try to get a better picture!
Interesting. Where in the mint process does this happen, how does a dime planchet fall in with the cent planchets?
Common answer: The planchets are moved to the die area in buckets [read as big canvas buckets -- what ever they are technically called] and dumped for striking. A planchet sits in the bottom of the bag until the next batch of, say dime planchets are loaded and moved for striking. The bucket is dumped and the unusual item goes thru and is struck with the wrong denomination. At least that is how I was taught to understand the process.
I noticed a while back someone on ebay had a buffalo nickel struck on a cent planchet, PCGS graded. Very nice but too rich for my blood.
