I bought this medal on ebay. I thought it was pretty interesting. It was advertised as being 1 0z. .999 silver. Is there anyone familiar with this medal that can confirm that? If it isn't, I wouldn't be that disappointed because I really like the medal itself.
It's unusual coin of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. It is not the coin of a Malta"s knight (Militare Ordine di Malta Sovrano). But it is very nice!
Thanks, Siberian Man for the info. I'm curious because the seller states that it's 1 oz. .999 silver, yet the references that I find to the zecchino is gold.
My resource shows that it is silvered copper nickel. It shows that 3,315 were struck this way... and only 3 were struck in .999 silver. These were most likely presentation pieces. There were also 3 struck in sterling silver, 3 struck in Franklinium, 3 Struck in brass, 3 struck in bronze, and 1 struck in platinum. The X#404 denotes that this is the silvered copper nickel.
Thanks for the information. Regardless, I did buy it for the medal itself. If it was silver, it would have just been a bonus.
