The lettering is raised and seems a bit thin, but I wanted to get a few more eyes on this cent. Does it look to be real, or is it one of the fakes?
Yeah, the eagle head is off. A lot of fakes are sold on eBay as real, from what I can tell after a bit more research. So is it a modern counterfeit, or contemporary?
There are different varieties this one was thought fake by a dealer but another forum says it's good. As for yours being modern or contemporary, IDK I imagine it is modern. Maybe there was even an R or COPY that was ground off of it. Try for an expert opinion on colonials. There are some here.
I don't usually comment on something I'm not familiar with but comparing Michael's real coin to yours, I don't see anything close. There are no feet and the bottom of the lettering and the lettering is wider. The arrow count is way off. But I'm just doing a photo comparison, nothing more.
Well with these colonials there was more than 1 type/ variety. But the crudeness of the original doesn't seem real to me.
Hi Gregg. I'm curious. Did you ever sort out if your coin was real or fake? I ask because I found one in my Dad's coin collection that looks identical to yours. Thanks! Julia
The Massachusetts cents were very well made and not nearly as crude as some of the other state coins that were made during the confederation period. The piece you pictured is quite crude. This one grades AU-58.
