What would you grade this 1897 Liberty Double Eagle? It has been graded by NGC. I want to see what you all think of it? I'll tell you the grade they gave it once several of you have taken a stab at it. Thanks!

I'll go with ms62 or 63, Nice clean coin but it looks like she needs a shave( or already had one)!!! ;)

The pics are inconclusive. You'll have to send it to me for further investigation. :)

If I can't convince you to do that, I'll just have to say that it closely resembles a number of auction coins which graded MS62.

I'm not good with gold but I would go with MS63....the face doesn't have many marks...and gold will always have hairlines since it is softer than silver....

Ms 62--or maybe 61 because of all the tick marks..there are some ares that show rub in the field and the scratches although light..are numerous. I see a speckeled area in front of her nose and the rub areas on the reverse as well.
Worst case would be a AU58....but still a very nice coin...just a note that upfront I am not a grader by any means..but have/had several of these myself..

Just like Morgans, some marks are permisable in the field and face, how many will designate the finnal grade.

I think the grading today goes more by how it looks to the eye....than how many marks and nicks.....
The marks that get me are by the nose and by the eagels head...

For numismatic education purposes [mine :) ] can you point out the rub areas, and what they look like in a photo. I just can't spot them.

I hate trying to grade these based on pics - it's just to dang hard to say without being able to tilt the coin in the light. So - if that is rub on the high point of the hair bun, and a bit of rub on the lines directly under the O in OF - AU58. If it isn't rub - MS63.

I don't see any wear but I think the "rub" that Rickie saw was here...
I think its just the photo....but I could be totaly wrong...Rickie is great when it comes to gold...

Hi guys. Thanks for all of your guesses!

NGC graded it MS62. I personally think it's a nice looking coin. I'm trying to decide on whether I'd like to buy it or not. I do appreciate your opinions as I've never bought a Double Eagle before.
