Sorry for the poor pictures *I'm trying my best :thumb:". I noticed this coin price jumps nicely in the lower grades. Thanks for the help. -Zach

I'm not sure if it's the pic or not but it looks like it might have been cleaned to me... the surfaces look funky.. very uniform...

I am with Matt. If that coin approached that coloring, it has been cleaned.

:desk: hmmm well that stinks, its been sitting around in the old folder with all the other coins :crying:. I think I got the coin for roughly $.01. It was with a ton of coins I picked up dirt cheap a few months ago.

Well, it is definitely worth more than 1¢. If that coin is nearing red with wear on the cheek like that, it has to have been cleaned.

Is there a possibility its just wear on the cheek?

or buried in clay, did you run it under some warm water,to see if the color changes a few hues.looks in the high VF-XF

Well the coins must have been sitting in the folders for years, would dust etc. do anything to the coin? Would you suggest a rinse?

    The Hugh is a bit off.and albums can make color variants.It wouldnt hurt for a warm water bath.just no scrubbing,no soap,no wiping.just a anti-dust bath/soak. and a pat dry.

I'll soak the coin for a little while in some warm water.

The cheek still shows some type of rub/wear overall color appears to me more brownish for the penny.

yeah,it is a circulated cent,so there will be rub, mainly from the album, what really matters is the overall color,it should have gone to a little browner color, that is good.

Before I looked at the replies I said to myself cleaned. I think it is cleaned but a very nice cleaned coin? Was it in a Whitman folder with the glue on it?

Cleaned or not so what. Your not selling that coin. Your not showing it off to neighbors or relatives. It still is a decent XF or a bit better so be happy with a nice looking coin that is approaching a hundred year mark. If you looked that good at that age, I hope you too would have had a few rinses.
My suggestion is to leave well enough alone. If that coin sat in a folder for many years and still is OK, leave it alone. For sure get rid of those Folders though.

Leaving it go is your best bet!! Never a good idea to clean it :)

Might be dust/glue i gave it a few minutes in some warm water and the color appears to be more of a brown.
