Just got this from PCGS. http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=6162&universeid=313&type=1&utm_source=ezine&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ezine04132010
This is not a surprise to me at all.I have been finding MPL's for years, and some did not have all of or any of the normal die markers.People just laughed at me,like I was....Well.I am glad somebody got the attention of PCGS.
Very interesting. But It does raise one very good question IMO. Why was this coin in a MPL PCGS slab, if it was missing the only diagnostics known for the series. Shouldn't it have been slabbed as a regular strike 1909? Either PCGS dropped the ball, or they are geniuses.
I'm really glad this was found for the 1909. It's really cool that Charmy found it and made it happen.
I don't think the grader would have looked at the diagnostics. If it would have been the VDB I feel he might have.
it says 1909 not 1909 VDB,maybe it was an older slab.Usually first glance you can see a difference ,at least I can
Perhaps the better answer is that it was just pronounced as a new die despite having zero diagnostics. Apparently, the main diagnostics are rather than the minutia of die scratches, chips and polish lines that are used to confirm the rest of the diagnostic.
If the coin looks like an MPL, and is quite obviously one, I doubt the graders take the extra time to look at the diagnostics and confirm that it is one. Very cool news, and cool that Charmy was involved. Way to go! Sell it for a million bucks as the discovery piece!
An interesting thread about this is starting at PCGS. Not so sure that Charmy should be getting all the credit. http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=771315
and to add more fuel to that fire, I actually sent the OP of that thread a private message in February just after Long Beach pointing out that his coin had none of the diagnostics... that prompted him to contact Brian Wagner and Kevin Flynn regarding the matter. so perhaps I have some claim as well I just think it's cool that there's research being done on a 100+ year old coin and that new things like this are being discovered. but proper credit should be given to all of those involved.
Yep, if Charmy is getting credit, you and Chris should be included. I find it hard to believe that Brian ignored either of you.
I'm not sure Charmy (or anyone else) is getting "all the credit" -- after all it's only a PCGS library entry, hardly an authoritative source. Furthermore, I suspect there's something else going on here, as I don't believe Charmy or Brian would shortchange anyone. Time will tell...Mike
Really? Please post high resolution photos of these coins. I'd sure like to see a few new dies...Mike
1909 p I pulled this one out of an eBay roll this morning. Picture #1 of the rims shows the one in this post to your left and the one on the right is from the 1909 VDB posted above.
