Hey, just wondering what everyone thinks of the Hot Springs quarter just released. I like all of the rest of the quarters, but I don't know why they decided to emphasize the building over the fountain. But I'm glad for the program. Mint director Moy mentioned in a Coin World article that they were having problems striking the 5-oz bullion coins. Seems like they will have edge lettering and the addition of edge lettering on this size tends to crumple the edges. But he's confident it will be solved. The bad news is that 2010 Proof Silver Eagles probably won't be made again because demand for silver coins is even higher than last year. So enjoy those America the Beautiful quarters!
I like 'em too. I think I'll enjoy them more than the state quarters simply they have a common theme.... parks and natural resources. I just want to see creative ways of putting landscapes on the coins. The quarter is pretty small to get a landscape vista on it. My favorite this year is the Grand Canyon coin because I like the perspective view with depth.
I am very exited about this program. Although 90% of my collection is nickels the state quarter series is what got me back into collecting from when i was a kid with my granddad. And i think i will really enjoy this series.
There seems to be no rush to buy the coins. From the US Mint website: "The Hot Springs quarter bags and rolls will be available for one year after this date". I cannot imagine these remaining on sale for one year though. TC
The ATB Quarters may be 'scheduled' to be on sale for a year, but my guess is that they will sell out long before the year limit is up. I would assume that the mint has already produced a finite number of these and has moved on to the next coin in the series already (Yellowstone) that is due out in June. Buy them now or pay high prices later - besides, you KNOW that the HSN buyers are going to be buying these by the truck load to sell to unsuspecting grandparents and others for 4x and 5x what the mint charged.
So long as they work in vending machines and toll booths I approve. My interest in collecting them is zero. Quarters are another denomination I have stopped collecting.
The state quarters is what got me collecting. i was only 9 when that series started and i think many other children will get into collecting if there is an interesting theme in the change they receive. I just bought my folder to start filling up.
I got the two roll set from the mint in the mail today. The boneheads! Both ends of both rolls are of the obverse, so I can't see the reverse design without opening the rolls. Dummies. Also, the coins look horrible, very scratched and dull. I would think for the price I paid, they would have at least one end show the new design!
I will reluctantly collect these as long as I find them in circulation. I am sort of burnt out from the state quarters (which I still have not fully completed). I may just get one of each design, rather than one from each mint just to keep it simple.
JDS These are just regular circulation coins. They don't take any special care with them. They are just dumped into dalistic bags and shipped to the rolling facility were the bag just dumps into a hopper and they get rolled. On average one out of every four rolls will come out a heads/heads combination. They are just regular bank rolls rolled with special paper.
The coins are you mention them are meant for circulation I think. Have you tried ordering their proof sets instead? The US Mint's new website AmericaTheBeautifulQuarters.gov , offers both circulaitng currency and proof set, including the first 5 oz silver sets. Maybe that's more of what you may have had in mind?
It's not very easy to find, but there's some information about the Silver Proof Set on their product page. Is that what you're looking for?
It's not available, and I think it will only be available through dealers, not directly from the mint.
