One of my favorite commemoratives, I want to purchase a couple more. Should I buy it in the original mint pkg. @$34.00 or MS/PRF NGC-69 @$43.00. I think most in the orginal pkg. would grade at least MS-69. Thanks for your input.
It totally depends on what you really want, graded,or ungraded.?? ungraded doesnt always mean ms69,sometimes ms70 and sometimes ms67...are you a gambling man? always look around,at auction, and buy it nows,to see where you can get want you want cheaper. So I would say answer to yourself raw/graded first, then research the best buy price.
If you are able to tell the difference between 69 & 70 for any of the commems, I would go to shows and try to cherrypick some raw. If you can't, then I would suggest that you buy the NGC slabs. The difference in price is only $9, and you couldn't get a raw one graded and shipped for that. Are the others that you have raw or slabbed? Chris
I would buy them in the original package, which is how I attempt to buy all of my modern commems. Truly, there are many folks who view the MS69 or PR69 coins as "failures" since virtually everything the US Mint produces within this niche grades 69 or 70. Not only do I prefer the original packaging, but when and if I sell there is always the chance that the coins inside might grade 70 for those interested,
Chris, I have four NGC MS-69 and on from the original mint pkg. Born in SF I love this coin and the Morgan Eagle Rev. I have never sent in any of my raw coins for certification and the pkg. of coin is appealing to me. Thanks for your suggestion.
But the original packaging, when you go to sell them they will command a slightly higher price than if they don't have it.
So by that reasoning, one might sell a slabbed coin with its OGP (empty) and realise even more?... No. Probably not. Collectors continue to be wooed by packaging not just the coin and place value in the package itself. You can often pick up empty boxes from dealers or on eBay if needed to go with your slabbed coin(s). Its not even likely most people would know if a coin was even in its original OGP. Buy the coin not the OGP nor the slab. If you want a graded coin buy the graded coin you agree with the grade it has been assessed with. Saying that some people believe everything the Mint churns out is high grade and doesn't need a TPG to grade it are still under the mindset that they are buying a certain grade of a coin. Many collectors will be able to point out a non-TPG graded OGP mint issued coin, but its grade remains subjective. If you want a graded coin buy one. If you want the OGP buy that but forget about the high-grade game. Why not start grading the quality of the packaging then?
