I agree all of them are beautiful,The King of Hawaii must have sent someone to the ABNCo in NY who had a good eye,I have seen several of the vignettes on other notes from the archive series, here are a few more beautiful examples: The King of Hawaii on the $500
I did a small amount of research on them, and they were "proof" issue and didnt even get used. They look fantastic,I am surprised they never went out to the public.
Their are stunning,I seen the $100 Silver Certificate Specimen Proof with a Large margin over 2 inches at a coin & currency show in the 1990s at The World Trade Center. But I never knew that they didn't circulate. Under the center Vignettes on most of them you will see The Union Jack (Great Britain)) on the early series & on later notes The Stars and Stripes.(U.S) I am surprised to here that none of them circulated ,does anyone have a link or an answer as to why they didn't circulate ?
Well, the $500 was probably too big for anyone's wallet. It's bigger than any other note I've seen. My guess is that the general population didn't trust them or were too poor to use them. And the bankers and merchants were probably happier with checks or American currency. Just a theory, tho.
OK ,that must mean that their are circulated lower graded obsoletes that circulated,I like to find one of the lower graded ones as an example. I bet even in say a fine note would be quite expensive.I wonder if PNG or PCGS has any population #s on any of them that they have graded signed notes .
Another banknote printed by the ABNC for Russians: 1 Rouble 1917, Russian-Asian Bank in Harbin, China.
Just got an email invoice from the ABNCo auction for $1,100.00 for a Chinese bill, lot #960, l didn't buy. When I called them to alert them to the mistaken invoice and to ask them about the three items I bought online during the auction I was told there were "problems" with the online auction and if I didn't get an invoice from them I didn't win the auctions. What a disaster. I'm a very unhappy currency collector right now.
Just got another email from the ABNCo auction stating I won two item and I no longer owe from the $1,100.00 note. I'm a happier currency collector.
Oh my! That is not a good situation. Sorry to hear of this Midas. There may be many unhappy bidders (non-bidders) out there and mismatched lots to bidders as well. Let us know how this goes...
Thank God ! I just looked up that 960 lot hammered down @ $850 ! (estimate $500-$1000). I'm glad to hear you don't owe for the wrong item. Congrats on the 2 items you won.
Harbin has long been a major railway hub for northern China, hence the vignette. They were actually using steam locomotives there on a regular basis up until 1999! I was so disappointed to discover they had gone to diesel when I went to China in 2003. Some great photos here: http://www.photosbystevenjbrown.com/prc/china.html
Beautiful Russian bill. ABNCo really is a national treasure. The auction needs a major tune up I'm sure I'm not the only one who had problems. Based on the invoices I received I will not receive lot 662. I'll post the other items after I get them. Thanks for the support guys. "Thank God ! I just looked up that 960 lot hammered down @ $850 ! (estimate $500-$1000). . ." After 18% commission it totals around $1,100 and they had my credit card number from the registration form!
