So the title pretty much says it all, I got a gold coin in one of those new edge view NGC slabs when they came out. I usually keep this coin in the drawer and take it out every once in a while to look at. It is a small coin and it looks good in the edge view case until I noticed it today. Two spots have formed on the coin. The color of the spots is a rusty-coppery looking color. One spot is roughly 1mm in diameter, the other spot is probably about 1/4mm in diameter. I find these spots to be quite odd since the coin has been inside the slab and also because this is .9999 gold. Has anybody come across something like this?
They sound like copper spots and are completely normal. There is no slab, as far as I know, that is air-tight, and thus all slabs will be affected by the appearance of copper spots. Hope this helps...MIke
As noted by Leadfoot, these spots are relatively normal...no worries. On pure bullion coins, they will likely have little or no effect on the value. On some gold coins with numismatic or sentimental value, it may detract somewhat depending on the coin. location/extent of the spots, and the observer. You may want to consider changing the location of the coin as your drawer may be made of wood that is affecting the coin. Others on the forum may also be able to suggest better storage methods (i.e. zip lock back with desiccant, etc.). TC
