So my work has given me a unique opportunity to live in Belgium for a bit. I’ve been reading up on Belgium’s history, which is quite amazing. I’m trying to decide if I want to shift away from German States Coinage and focus on coins from Belgium. If you have any awesome coins from Belgium, or have any recommendations on coin shops there, post them here! This isn’t my coin, but it’s an area I’m strongly considering collecting: siege/rebel coins of the region.
Here's a siege coin from Anvers 1814 10 centimes which unfortunately doesn't have a lot of detail. Also an 1841 5 centimes. But honestly I don't really like Belgian coins that much. They're not super interesting and I feel like no one seems to collect them.
One of my favorites. Namur is a county in Southern Belgium. This is a copper piece. I don't have anything after 1500's A.D.
I’m actually hoping this works in my favor for getting nice coins at a bargain. I actually went and viewed a possible home for rent in Namur! I like it
I actually collect pre-Euro, high-grade Belgian coins. As opposed to what many people think, it is a fascinating field of numismatics - 2 sets of languages, overdates, varieties, and generally the fact that the Bruxelles mint was constantly innovating / experimenting. The designs are attractive (in my opinion), and generally available in good condition. Although there are deals to be had, be aware that there are a number of very serious Belgian coin collectors, and that really good pieces rarely change hands at bargain prices. Get yourself an Aernout catalog - it is fully illustrated, excellently researched, and offers realistic valuations, as well as tonnes of generally unlisted varieties (that is where your bargains will be). Plus Laurens is a great person, and always willing to answer questions / correspond (as am I). Welcome to the Belgian coin community! Attached is a picture of my 20 Sol 1709 Tournai Siege Klippe.
that’s Belgium… that’s what they eat (looks familiar, huh?) …and that’s the board game I played with the kids when we were there last time (now my post is coin-related)
And this one came back after the war with my father. With the 9th Armored, they turned the tide at St Vith & Bastogne. And on to Germany When they returned as a group,50 years later, they held a parade and got a key to the city. Dad lived to 93 yo
Very cool! Let me know if you want photos from any of the places he fought. It is indeed! Germany does too. I can’t wait to get back to French fries and mayo.
@Seattlite86 It is indeed! Germany does too. I can’t wait to get back to French fries and mayo. Just take a jar of Dukes mayo with you when you go out to eat.
Here's my only coin from Belgium. I couldn't resist it getting it for my set of a coin from every century as far back as I can go. Photo credit to Stacks Bowers.
@Tall Paul Would you start a thread and share your century collection. We would like to see those amazing pieces.
