Just came across this little item. A long time ago I ordered a report from the Government Printing Office on the production of the US Mint. The report covers years 1792 to 1961 and is dated 1962. The cost was $.25.

The report covers the production quantities and face value of all gold, silver and minor coinage at Philadelphia and the branch mints. All Mint directors, with their terms, etc. are included as well as the authority of all coin issues.

    Nice.

As this is Public Record, I wonder if a PDF exists of this document.

Nice going. Now that is the type of item you see on the Antique Road Show where something is bought for .25 and is worth $$$$$$$$$$$. Wishfull thinking a little.

  7. Great purchase for 25 cents! I would bet you would get a lot more than that if you decided to sell it. Congrats! TC

I bet it's even more interesting than many of the coin related periodicals, plus it has no advertisements. I'd read this baby cover to cover!

Ahhh...1962, back when you could buy something of value for a quarter.

Very interesting...does it also include figures for any of the coin melts"?

As I recall I saw a listing for Government Publications with this listed. In sequence each Mint's production is listed in pieces and in dollar value, by gold, silver, and minor coinage.

No, no mention of any of the coinage melts conducted over the years, just production.

I have been wondering about where to find this information if it is available. Does anybody know if it would be included in the annual report of the Director of the Mint?

Yes it IS included in the Annual Report, or at least it used to be. The annual reports used to contain a great deal of interesting information, but a few years ago they changed the format and now they contain little of interest.

I'm slowly collecting the Annual Mint reports. If anyone is interested in the very early reports good information can be found here http://www.chicagocoinclub.org/lib/us/usmnt/mr.html
They also have a ink to to Library of Congress Finance section where you will have to do some searching, but you can find all of the annual reports up to 1828.

The annual report for 1891 can be found here (report starts on page 127) 1891 annual report
I also have a PDF file of the annual report from 1870 available if anyone is interested. Too large to post but I can email it.
