NGC is most of my certified coins, but that is only because the type of coins I buy have recently been ancient and foreign which are more commonly certified by NGC
My only experience with TPGs was with ANACS. I sent 10 variety coins in, and they came back with pretty much the grades I expected. Problem was than they all had a small smudge in the obverse field, in front of Lincoln's face. I presume this is where they were "pushed" into the slab, probably with a gloved finger. Folks may think that a gloved finger is OK to touch coins with, but they are not.
ICG slabs carry the lowest "premium" cost over raw coin prices than the other three. Lowest plastic cost equates to "least desirable." Given identical coins in identical grades/ eye appeal, ICG will draw lower demand. Just my personal opinion / observations. Z
They do basically only classic US coins with very few exceptions like some IKEs and a couple varieties for stickers. They don’t and never have done any world coins. https://www.caccoin.com/
I've collected since I was a kid. Now my kids are young adults. Not really serious about it - I just liked to pick up stuff and put it in blue Whitman Albums occasionally. I never submitted any coins for grading, but I started to pick some (graded coins) up along the way - because I was concerned about authenticity. I lurked here - on CoinTalk for some years and found out about the ICG special. At some point I decided because I'd acquired a 1923-S details Standing Liberty Quarter in a PCGS slab - that I would start a "top" set of the SLQs, that would all be graded and slabbed by the big four - PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG. Submitting to ICG and getting direct results on my coins and my opinions on same has been really helpful - I also like having them authenticated and judged by two / three professional graders (for only $10 on the CoinTalk special!!??!?!). So count me a huge fan of ICG. I did buy the discounted NGC membership for $99 with a $150 credit so I intend to try out NGC and I will also try out ANACS when they have a special that suits my collecting. I am just a collector - not a reseller and I don't worry about selling - though I have on occasion. I've seen overgraded and undergraded in all four of the big graders. If you want to resell, PCGS is probably the way to go. If you want good grades, I think you're in good shape with any of the four (though NGC seems best for world coins and medals and ANACS for Morgan VAM varieties).
I recently sent a group of 7 world coins too be graded to NGC because I had a grading credit by joining under the ANA. Shipped on 9/21 and are scheduled to be graded now, so right on par with their turn around times which I'm happy with. Hoping to get them back before Christmas! I personally like the look of the NGC holder and the majority of my slabbed collection resides in them. I have several PCGS coins and even some ANACS. I've owned ICG coins too, but when it comes time to sell some buyers treat them simply as raw coins. This is my first grading submission and the NGC folks have been very good at answering my questions throughout the process. But, I hope to make a post when my submission returns and I'll let you all know my experience with NGC.
It depends on what you collect. All around, NGC is the best option if you're only going to pick one TPG. PCGS is better or on par with NGC for almost all US types, so its the best choice if you are exclusively a US collector. There are some US types that are graded better by NGC though, like capped bust varieties and Jefferson nickels. If you collect Morgan's by VAM, you may wish to go with ANACS as they attribute the most VAMs. If you collect world coins, you want to go with NGC. PCGS overgrades world coins a lot, though many PCGS world coins are also correctly graded. They are not close to NGC in terms of their identification of world types, including varieties, and they have not put in the same time and effort NGC has done to create a well-organized world catalog and census. Note that there are some countries that have their own TPGs that may be better for that specific country's coins. So if you're really deep into a specific country's coinage that has their own respected TPG, that may be a better option than NGC. If you collect ancients and for some reason want a slabbed coin you are in the vast minority, but you'll also be using NGC. If you collect medals or jetons and want them slabbed, for US medals either PCGS or NGC are good. For world medals it depends on the medal. NGC grades and identifies them superior to PCGS medal service, but PCGS is more flexible in slabbing more types of medals without a perfect identification. For example, PCGS would slab something as "silver medal" whereas if NGC couldn't positively identify it in a major catalog they would not slab it.
For me its PCGS all day. Truview added to every coin. Even the po01 coins i send in. That 5.00 may be the best 5.00 spent on the grading. I have coins I'll resubmit later just to add that. Not many but some.
I have only used ANACS. I like some of their specials and have always had good customer service; they actually answer their phone and emails. My last submission was 10 coins back in October and took 6 weeks from the time they recieved them to the time them mailed them back to me. Regards.
