Down to those last three nearly impossible holes in my three cent nickel book. Filling the holes with circulated examples like an honorable numismatist would do isn’t practical…. Or possible…. So I have settled on filling those spaces with proof examples which are far more available. Since I am the worlds worst bidder, I put @ToughCOINS on the hunt and he did not disappoint…. I do love a proof coin.
Amazing coin. So ... only two more? Will you be as lucky? And kudos to @ToughCOINS for assisting you.
That is a fantastic piece, Randy, and thanks for sharing! I think Mike has an excellent eye for great looking coins.
Years ago I tried to assemble an 1885 mint set w/o the Trade Dollar. I never found a business strike of the 1885 three cent piece. Every one I was offered turned out to be a proof. Over the last twenty years I can count on two fingers the number of times I have seen one appear in an auction by Stacks Bowers or Heritage.
That's just awesome! Still wish I had my 1878...I've told the story here before so I won't repeat it.
@Randy Abercrombie Just out of curiosity, do you have an 1878? I'd love to see a photo of it if you do.
I am at my office and don't have that book with me.... If memory serves, 1878 was a proof only year and my Dansco is a business strike page. I don't even think my book acknowledges 1878.
Yes, it was a proof only year, only 2,350 were minted. That's why I'm still kicking myself for selling it.
Glad I’m not the only one feeling what’s it’s like to be so close to filling all those holes. Beautiful coin and I don’t think I could have plugged a hole with it being that nice.
Randy, by your thread title I was expecting to hear of a new grandchild. Still, I was not disappointed.
Well... I hate to disappoint... And since I am a proper grandfather that likes to gloat over his grandbaby..... Here you go.
