how do i clean a 1906 liberty head/v-nickel without damaging the value

    tried using conserv coin cleaner but it didn't work, this is not my nickel, but it looks very similar[​IMG]

    Hi and welcome to CT, good advice in the above post. Improper cleaning would look similar to your avatar image. Dark haloes in and around the date and stars, resulting in a look that says "altered"/cleaned. Not something you want.

    Best not to clean coins and since you’re new and asking you would make the coin worse than it is.

    If you just gotta try SOMETHING, an acetone soak is probably your safest bet.

    I would differ than most here - i would clean a nickel like that - you can't get any lower in coin value that you already have for a 1906.
    Some nasty coins i get from roll hunting go thru a rock tumbler and sometimes that doesn't help either. Wire brush might be your best/worst option but the damage is already done. Good Luck
