Any idea what might have caused the surfaces on the reverse of this 1878 CC Morgan to appear as they do? I’m stumped…
Looks like some corrosive chemical got/put on it and wasn't noticed for a period of time. Either accident or trying to alter the surface. IMO. Jim
You think a qtip and some distilled water or something a little stronger? At this point it looks cleaned and not finished, or is that dark etched into the surface?
It was probably dipped at some point and not rinsed properly. Then it may have gone into an envelope. I have never been much of a coin dipper, but years ago, a dealer told me that stuff like Tarn-X was one of the worst things you could use. I remember the ads when they told us that it was great for “shining coins.”
I was reading the PCGS grading guide just the other day about mottled toning. They say "Silver coins contain 10% copper and the combination of alloys can be uneven and contribute to a variety of ueven and mottled toning." Just a thought.
