Still catching up on coins I've bought in the past year or two that I haven't posted yet. Here's a beauty. Got this one last year, but it has an absolutely stunning rainbow! Guess the grade and Overton (this one is a very distinctive variety and should jump out, if you know what you're looking for)
I know the variety, but will give others a chance to play. As to grade, my first thought was VF 35, but I raised it to XF-40 (and wouldn't be surprised at 45)
about XF-40, give or take 5 pts, O-107 button cap variety… but most importantly it’s a very nice coin
You guys are all too generous on the grade (compared to what PCGS said). The luster is throwing you off a bit, I think - take a look at the level of wear on the coin.
Thanks! Yes, as several of you mentioned, the variety stands out because of its unique "button in cap" feature. This is O-107, rated as an R-2 or R-3 depending on where you look. Nobody has guessed the grade that PCGS gave it yet, so I'll wait to post that until this afternoon!
Retained luster does not throw graders off. It is the default criteria a grader should resort to using when a coin was struck poorly or non-uniformly, as in this case. In addition to the retention of so much original mint luster, there are as many fully formed stars as flat ones, and the "A" in "STATES" is nearly absent despite mint luster around and within it. PCGS is mistaken, and you are the lucky beneficiary.
That is reasonable, Tough. For those curious - PCGS gave this a VF-30. I paid a whole lot more than that when I got it from Heritage!
I didn't even think it would be low enough for vf35... but conservatively vf35. Wow. Obviously that's why you paid more. Because people bid on the coin and not the holder.
