Hey so I'm still admittedly in the learning phases of Swiss shooting medals and started buying them mostly because they look cool. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me anything about this one though. It's an NGC-certified 42mm 1864 Geneva medal, R-594. What's interesting to me is that it's certified as R-594var. AE, Silvered. It seems to be the only one of this variety certified by NGC or PCGS from what I can tell, and a silvered finish is not even listed in the Richter book. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me anything about this piece. Did I accidentally stumble on something unique? Pictures below.
I know the Swiss love to hand them out.... not to be funny but have seen hundreds of Swiss shooting medals over the years. Idk any values but have seen price points from very reasonable to higher price points. If you go on to Ebay CA. Or EU. or find a over seas dealer who ships reasonably. I purchased some nice items from Portugal and Spain. 1
Just from looking at ebay prices, they tend to go for a few hundred dollars, and it seems like age doesn't really affect the value, more-so the rarity. Here's a bit of history about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schützenfest#Switzerland
Yeah I've looked on eBay, I just don't see any other silvered ones out there, just copper, which is why I'm wondering if this may be more rare than those. I'll try the international ebay sites too but still appreciate if anyone else knows anything about this medal specifically.
