    Hello friends,
I found this item in a junk pile and wondering what it could of been used for for half dollars back in 1880.

    It says:
    $10 Halves
    PAT FEB 21 1880

It measures 2 cm by 4 cm

Can you post a picture of the other side, it looks like an early coin counter. They work like a casino chip rack, you just place coins in it until it's full instead of counting them.

Here is a picture of the underside, it doesn't hold coins on it very well

It's pretty cool. Definitely not junk.

If it is what I think it is it doesn't need to hold them very well. Have you checked to see if it actually does hold $10 in halves ?

It must be something along the lines of a counter because its length is is equivalent to $10 in halves. Thanks for identifying it.

Could it be a lid to a larger container?

Is that a fresh roll of 1880 half dollars that you found with it?:)

It is showing that it received a patent on February 21, 1880. This means that it was produced after that date and might have been produced many decades after the date stamped on the device.
