Here is my latest hammered coin.. Its an Edward III Half Groat minted in London, very nice detail but it has been clipped a bit as you can see..
I got it in a lot of coins. Paid £19 for all the coins, re sold the junk and come out with this so I paid roughly £15 for it, I think its worth about £30.
I don't think it is clipped. It looks like the way the metal spresd from the stiking with the hammer. It didn't have a collar to make it round. Thus the irregular shape.

Its a rare hammered silver coin that ISN'T clipped in some way, as they were usually accepted at face value. This is less of the case with gold though, as it is my understanding that gold coins were only accepted according to their weight, not their face value. They primary purpose of making gold into coins in the middle ages was only to guarantee their purity, as their value fluctuated against silver, which was the monetary standard back then...
