Here are three more Franklins from the collection I purchased. Only a couple pics of each to keep the photo clutter down. Obviously, grades on holders aren’t accurate. The toning on the ‘49S is beautiful. Full bell lines on that one?
@Mark Metzger , before I respond with another writeup like I did in the last post (which, I will do that this afternoon)... I'd really like to see you do that same sort of analysis and tell us what you think. Go through Strike, Luster, Eye Appeal, and Contact Marks for each coin, and tell us what you see. Describe what the coin looks like, and then give us what you think the grade might be. Obviously, the "67s" written on each coin is fanciful.
@physics-fan3.14 Here are my thoughts: 49s Strike: looks close to FBL though some weakness to left of crack Luster: plenty of luster on this one Contact: lots of chatter and a big bag mark on franks head…looks like Frankenstein Eye Appeal: the best of the bunch. A real beauty!!! Grade: ms63 FBL 52s Strike: no FBL with weakness and cut to left of crack Luster: plenty of luster on this one…blast white Contact: better than the 49 but still chattery. Eye Appeal: a pretty coin. Nothing particularly memorable Grade: ms64 54s Strike: best chance at FBL Luster: plenty of luster on this one too. Blast white. Contact: limited chatter with a few dings left side of bell, just right of crack, in front of face. Eye Appeal: very attractive coin overall. No distractions. Quite lovely. Grade: ms65 FBL
Good job! Here's my additions/changes to your thoughts: 1949S - The weakness to the left of the bell crack means no FBL. While there are several marks on the coin, there aren't too many major ones. Eye appeal is excellent. I'd give this a 64 (no FBL) 52S - I pretty much agree with what you said. 64. 54S - This is probably the nicest one you've shown so far. I don't like the mark in the obverse right field, but I've seen worse on a 65. The rest of the coin looks quite nice overall. As for FBL - PCGS only uses the bottom set of bell lines, NGC uses both sets. This would get FBL at PCGS, but probably not at NGC. So, I'd probably call this one 65 FBL if you sent it to PCGS.
This may be interesting enough that it might get too many long reports. You may think about limiting an entry to 1 or 2, etc. But What do I know? I'm just a 74 year old retired state employee.
49 S - MS 63 pretty toning, too many marks. Probably a 62 without the toning 52 S - MS 63 Obverse is 64, too many marks on the reverse which drop it a grade 54 S - MS 65 FBL a beauty
