I forget that while some of you have followed the 20lc set from the start others have no idea about it even now (and may not care ) but I'm gonna explain the set as I think it's a good story/idea for young or new collectors to try. "building a very respectable coin set on a small per coin budget" allowing coins of all grades as long as they were purchased in that price range. but always seeking the best for the price So It all started back in 2011 when I won an auction for a slabbed pcgs "genuine" 1857 large cent for 27 dollars with free shipping... even then 27 dollars (with free shipping I called it $22) was a shocking price for that coin in any condition and it got me to thinking. I saw that LCs were ignored by most collectors who concentrated in silver and gold. That and some Very nice pieces were selling every weekend for 10-25. So I decided to build the best set of LCs possible for a budget price of $20 per coin. It went well and quickly built up to some 25-26 coins.. Well at that point "Life happened" and all but one of those LCs sold for 650 bucks and saved my bacon (hardest coin sale I ever had to make) one of the few coins to survive the purge was that $27 1857... well around 2018 things got better (not fixed but better, still fighting with the VA... fun fun) and then 2020 "happened" so one day looking at that 1857 I decided to attempt the $20 LC set again setting the budget as... $20 Average coin cost with a price ceiling of $25 for any single coin (recently raised to 29.99 max for any single coin as long as the average price remained below 20) with a current average coin price of $17.57 and the highest price paid for any single coin Under 30 bucks (20ish ) (i did so not pay extra for that walking lib half to get the LC price under 25 so there ) Anyway In now almost 3 Years since the re/start of the 2020 $20 LC set this is where the set stands now and the coin that started it all... (link to gallery is under pics and will be updated again soon (5-6 coins missing cause I been lazy) https://www.cointalk.com/media/albums/the-2020-20-large-cent-set.1855/
I collect on a budget. I thought about doing an "Under $50" set of 1793-1814 cents, and just get as many as I could, but I don't have a price limit. I just paid $75 for a Fugio and that was a real great price for that coin, especially with the Fugios being considered official US coins now. If you have not already seen it, give my album a look: https://www.cointalk.com/media/albums/filip’s-early-large-cents.2130/ The Liberty Cap was $55, and all other coins in the album were under $50. There's some genuinely good ones in there, too!
Some very nice coins there I saw the Fugio post when you got it and have to admit I'm jealous and I would have snapped that up in a heartbeat for that price screw my budget My brother did however send me a very nice forgery of one lol...
Cool to find a Fugio at that price. Due to its tie with Ben Franklin, it was one of the few US coins I still had a itch to scratch. I picked up a pleasant VF at a coin show last year, but it was not $75...
