Here is a 1941 2 Franc that is counterstamped by the free french. Coin is in pretty good shape considering Aluminum Ooops - title is wrong - sorry I have looked around the net and could not find any similar. Any ideas??
they look like chinese counterstamps,you can see similar on trade dollars.or at least they look like it.just my guess.
The counterStamp is of the Cross of Lorriane. That was the symbol of the free french resistance under C. D Gaulle.
You are right about the Cross of Lorraine, but I don't think this is a particular type or variety. Somebody will have altered this single piece (or maybe a few) to promote the idea of the résistance. Historically interesting, but that won't make it a rare type in terms of possible value ... Christian
I would not think that this would classify as a type or variety. Probably would best be described as 'post mint damage'. But as an historical object, this may be of some value. I have seen French francs with countermarks refering to Battle of 'Sedan'. These had a premium associated. I have searched and not found any references to the free french counterstamp. This coin just may be a unique mark made by a partisan which would have no premium associated. I am just curious if there is any literature on said counterstamop.
