Has anyone seen these auctions. I got four 1921-D dollars and they were all less than $11.00 each. Certainly not MS-63 like advertised but after cracking them out they sure were close to AU58 if not MS-62. Pretty nicely toned too.

I've been checking out PCI coins lately. Seems if they aren't overgraded they are undergraded. I've bought some nice coins which were 2-3 grades higher than stated on the holder.

Hummm... make up a name for yourself, buy your holders, grade your own coins, run 'em on Ebay for a premium... nahhhh. :)

That is the most recent company to use those initials (There have been at least four compaines using those initials) Treat them like raw coins (As you should do with all slabbed coins.)

This is not an professional TPG. It is nothing more than a private dealer with access to a computer to make fancy labels. There are many out there doing this selling way overgraded coins at inflated prices (for the actual grade). Did you notice that he is using CoinWorld holders that anyone can purchase (emblem on slab)?

Nope, I never saw that. I just saw a nice 1921-D Morgan at $10.49 :)

    I have a question...

If an existing company started a grading service (using a generic slab) and was accurate in the grades assigned AND offered a written LIFETIME refund of the submission cost, would you try them. Also, if the same company grading the coins sold the coins with a written LIFETIME return policy, would you buy them?

Personally I would be somewhat hesitant to purchase coins from the company grading them. Hmmmm - sounds kinda similar to PCGS

In my opinion a grading company should act as a disinterested 3rd party. They should in no way be associated with the sale of the coins they are grading.

While I see the points you are trying to make - how could they possibly be implemented ? A lifetime refund of submission cost based on what exactly ? What criteria would have to be met in order for this refund to be issued ? Same thing with a lifetime return policy - what criteria would be used ? And at what price could the coin be returned - the current price, the price you paid - what happens if the price goes up or down ? And above all who gets to dewtermine whether the established criteria, whatever they turn out to be, have been met or not - the company who did the grading, the owner of the coins, or someone else ?

Do you see the problems with such ideas ?

"No Questions Asked Refund" based on Customer Satisfaction!

Although, many people who submit coins for grading know how to grade and would know if the grade assigned was satisfactory, there are many more who are new to the hobby and do not know how to grade. These are the people who depend on the grading service to correctly grade coins. It may be years before a person feels they have gained the knowledge to decide if a coin was graded correctly and they should be able to request a refund at that time.

The refund would only be issued to the original submitter of the coin. This person would also have to sign a form stating the coin has been removed from the holder prior to the refund being issued.

The refund would only be given to the original purchaser of the coin and the coin would have to be returned in the same holder, in new condition.

Every coin would come with a buyer specific Return Certificate valid during the lifetime of the company. The coin could be returned by the original submitter named on the certificate for a full refund of the purchase price.

I know of few companies offering more than a 30 day return policy. Some companies charge a restocking fee when the coin is returned. No company offers to refund above the purchase price.

    Nope...they don't....
People send in coins for grading for many reasons but I would say that many people that submit coins to NGC or PCGS or any of the other top 4 don't eitehr know how to grade or know how to grade RIGHT...there is a big word there....RIGHT...you can know how to grade and not do it right.
I'll be the first to say that I'm no grader...I'm still learning and I'll be learning along time yet...

Yes, and that's exactly why I think anyone who feels they have the knowledge to grade coins for a fee should be willing to back up the grade as long as they are in the business of grading coins.

Also remember that many people submit coins not only for grading but also authentication. If a person or company is going to offer a grading service then they had better be able to make sure coins submitted are also authentic examples. This is VERY difficult and even the top 4 TPG's have problems with authentication in some cases. If such a company is going to offer a guarantee then it had better cover this also.

In other words, if I buy at the peak of a cycle, when prices take a dip (as they inevitably willl) I can get my original price refunded?

I guess that would work right up to the day the company goes bankrupt.

My point exactly. I also think it would be more than a bit of a problem to refund grading fees based on the owner's opinion. I mean it's a noble idea, but for a business to STAY in business, they have to show a profit. And based on what I have seen that many collectors think about the grades assigned to coins they submit - there'd be a whole lot of them returned.

Kinda hard to show a profit that way. It's a wonderful idea - I just don't think it very practical.

Let me make it clear that I am not trying to upset anyone but I think this is a good topic of discussion. Forgive me if you are offened by my comments.

I would hope that anyone who has the knowledge and/or financial standing to purchase a coin that needs to be authenticated would also have the knowledge to select PCGS or NGC to provide these services. I don't think any advanced collectors would send a coin to an unknown company.

We're not talking about a company offering hundreds of high grade commons, overgraded coins and modern MS70 and PF70 coins. We're talking about a company offering a small group of correctly graded, reasonably priced high grade key coins in a series, type coins and higher demand modern coins. I would have no problem offering any of these coins with the return policy above...

    1857 Large Cents AU/Better - 1909S Indian Cents XF/Better
    1851O Three cents Silver AU/Better - 1926S Buffalo Nickels F/Better
    1916D Mercury Dimes G/Better - 1996W Roosevelt Dimes MS67/Better
1938D W/L Halves AU/Better - There are many others too!

There are many coins I sold in the past that my replacement cost now is more than the sell price was. There would be 100's of dealers filing for bankruptcy if this was the case. If you sell quality coins, you can buy them back, even if you don't make a profit and not go under.

The coins would not be returned so all the grading company would be out would be the cost of the holder and labor. Also, if the company grades correctly according to the older standards and not current market standards, I don't think you'd see that many coins being returned.
