Several very, very cheesy websites on the internet are devoted to lucky sixpence coins - which are usually very common copper-nickel ones from the 50s and 60s. This practice is apparently more of an English custom, but my bride to be does have strong English and Irish roots, so I thought I may see if I can put a sixpence in her shoe. But I can't decide if I should go with the common Elizabeth one, maybe a worn young Victoria one, or maybe even an Irish sixpence. Have any of you followed this tradition with your brides? Or is it just pure cheese?
My wife had a sixpence in her shoe at the wedding. Same one my mother used. I don't know which type- Mom still has it. Neat tradition for a coin collector though.
I think I'm going to have to go with an Irish sixpence. Everyone knows that coins are an important part of my life so some sort of sixpence is going to be required I'd think. She'd probably be thrill by the Irish 6d. Plus the bride likes animals so she may like it too. Hey, and the dog is a classic symbol of fidelity! Perfect choice the more that I think about it.
This one has done duty in two weddings and I promised one bride to save it for a daughter to use. My wife and daughter used the same modern (1950's) EII which is thicker and less comfortable. Prices being what they are on hammered coins it may be getting to the point that you don't want to risk a nice old coin but these thin ones come in all grades.
OK I showed her an Irish sixpence on an eBay BIN and she loved it. For the record we're not superstitious at all, but it's still fun to follow these sorts of traditions.
I do beleive my wife had a cent in her shoe, but I made sure my sister had a six pence when her day came.
