My " Guess " is based on the dot , meaning it was minted in Bombay. Also guessing it is " Second Head " and .9170 Silver. And I really have no clue as to what I am talking about.

Catalog price I would say $750. Market, I don't know. The dot, small head + small denticles, and the fact you said it was from a proof set, it looks like KM #554. Others feel free to correct me, but I'm pretty sure.

Just took a look at KM#554. Looks right but I am not seeing the dot on the book coin.
Makes me think it might be KM#555 but I am wrong more than I am right. LOL

I took another look at my catalog, KM #554 definitely had the dot, too. But you're right, the differences between KM #554 and 555 are pretty minor. But 555 also has that small decorative rim around the side with the denomination, and since there's no trace of that I went with KM 554. But $600 might be the market value, I'm not sure how many collectors of these are out there, what the demand is, and ultimately, the "worth" of a coin in my opinion is determined by what collectors are willing to pay for it. A catalog might list some coin at $750, but if the collecting community is only willing to pay $500 for whatever reason, that is what the true "worth is".

Regardless, nice coin. Do you collect British India coins?

My mother always told me, it's only worth what somebody will give you for it. Anybody else learn that lesson the hard way?

Nice coin BTW. Hope it's winner for you. I.e. somebody is willing to pay you a lot for it.

wow thanks for the great info guys! i didnt expect all that so quick lol, i used to buy new coins every week, i stopped collecting in the early 90s after my wife found a 10k credit card receipt for some gold coins...ouch huh? truely worth it though seening as that 10k purchase is now worth 40 k in just boullian value rite? i havent been in this game for almost 20 years now and i actually just got back from a coin shop, sold like 40 silver eagles for for 20-30 each! wow...i only paid like 100 bucks for all of them lol.....i will admit though, i am a gas station owner and some people will bring in what they think is invaluable change to pay for gas....i got (4) 5 dollar 1/4 ounce gold coins and (3) 10 dollar 1/4 ounce coins for regular purchases....lol

if there are any interested buyers for this coin please feel free to pm me with offers, like i said, i havent been really collecting for the past 20 years but would lke to move some of this old treasure off to someone who would appreciate it. thanks again guys!
